Hey guys so I am healed and I am about four months off, I was healed around month 2 and a half, but I need surgery tomorrow and will be getting anesthesia and either a benzo beforehand or vicodin,  I can have the option of not having the benzo or the vicodin and just toughing it out with the anesthesia and some motrin but I am worried about being in pain. I have read the ashton manual says that a one time benzo for surgery is fine but I would just like to hear if anybody has any words of advice if they have been through this before.

Please no negativity I am really nervous about tomorrow enough and I just want to know that I will be ok

First things first: everyone has their own biological differences and reactions can differ. That said, my experience with benzos, after having been on them and withdrawn 3 times, is that it doesn't take me long at all to get back into them. After having gone through this many times, I never want to touch one again. The common prescribing mentality these days seems to be: take them for 2 - 4 weeks, but no longer. After taking 1mg diazapam a day for 2 weeks, I could not stop without horrendous withdrawal.

So that's my experience. I think it would be reasonable to tell the doctor or nurse that you've had bad experiences with benzos in the past and what are the other options. Good luck!

Ok thank you, yeah I have no desire to ever take them again and I wasn't an addict I was prescribed klonopin for anxiety so I have never ever wanted or craved benzos at all, it is just a common part of surgery they give you sometimes before going on. I think it will be ok and thanks for your advice. I would be pretty much under before being given the benzo so i wouldn't even remember having it

Yep I just decided it was going to take however long it would take and I jumped in the end of april and was better by mid-end of july. Best of luck, and just remember that acute only can last tops 3 months so you are probably still in the sensitive CNS phase but it gets better, it does for everybody, nobody stays sick forever I promise. Try to get back out there and get back into normal life, I had to deal with a lawsuit a month off of benzos, testify in court, deal with lawyers everything and it was hard but just exposure to normal life again kind of rehabituated myself to living again and then it was fine.

I just mean in terms of acute not lasting that long but a lot of people do still have waves that far out and from what I can understand pain in your body can be related to your nerves reacting to living without that constant gaba agent that is benzos, but if you are having chronic pain I would see a doctor just to get things like calcium levels and vitamin levels checked out to see what is going on in the off chance it could be unrelated to benzo withdrawal, also the dizziness I did have that and your balance does come back, it looks like you were on it much longer than I was so that is probably why it is taking a minute and I never really had an underlying anxiety disorder so it could be old anxiety you had coming back, but I am not a doctor so I definitely would do research for yourself a bit more. Waves are normal and they get shorter in duration and intensity until one day they stop and never come back and you are totally healed.

You will be ok, I went through a very traumatic surgery a few hours ago without sedation because I was SO afraid it would bring back withdrawal, but you know what that taught me? We are ALL so much stronger than we think and we can truly get through anything and persevere, I don't believe in god but I believe we are all here on this planet for a purpose and there is always something we can take away from a situation that is positive, maybe try to think what you will do after withdrawal that will add to the world in a positive way. I am sending you SO much love and positivity.

I really think that you could be stuck in the withdrawal mentality in a sense, because it has been a long time for you since you have been off, it is so important to get out of the house and just live life again, you get so used to living separate away from the world not interacting with society or people because we forget how important it is to do so, try to get out of the house more and also maybe realize that not everything you feel is related to withdrawal you know, I have had to get used to certain things again like when I don't sleep well because I have a big meeting tomorrow I would think 'oh it must be withdrawal related' and then my fiance would snap me out of it and say 'you only slept four hours last night of course you are tired'

Good luck with the procedure tomorrow.  I had some dental work done this past year and was twice sedated.  Both times, I requested that no benzos be in the 'mix'.  The oral surgeon asked me why the first time, but seemed to accept my concerns.

The only downside is that I was a little bit awake during the procedure.  I didn't feel a thing and could only barely move.  I often dozed, but was also awake sometimes.  But I was very calm throughout.  It wasn't bad or scary or anything to be semi-lucid during the procedure.

Hi Songbird,

Good luck with the surgical procedure. I would definitely avoid benzos and opiates.

Is propofol an option? I can't find what type of surgery you are going to get.

Fingers xxx!!!
