Sleep Doctor- Amitriptyline/Lunesta

So my insomnia has forced me to make an appointment with a sleep specialist.  Has anyone had success with this?  Also, I am considering Amitriptyline, but usually do not react well to anti-depressants.  If this doesn't work, I am considering Lunesta.  Any idea if Lunesta is just as bad as a benzo?  I'll do anything at this point..

Lunesta is not a benzo, but does bind to the same GABA receptors that benzos do.  You have to be careful here because the Lunesta can have the same calming effect as benzos which will cause some people to take it often to feel better and then become dependent on it.  Especially those of us with a benzo addiction.

I have a superscription for Lunesta and have only taken it once.  It didn't seem to help me all that much @ 2mg, but I seem to have a high tolerance to sleep meds.

If you do decide to try it, just take it only when all else fails.  You don't want to be tapering off of two meds!

Good luck

Lunesta is basically a benzo.  Take it and healing will stop and stopping lunesta will be like stopping a benzo in a lot of ways.  The Ashton manual has a great explanation of the non-benzo 'Z' drugs like lunesta and Ambien. They are sedative hypnotics and Atro66 said, they are acting on the gaba system same as a benzo.

Be very careful.
