Has anyone had blood sugar fluctuations on and off during their taper? I'm a non diabetic, but fear I might become one!
Posted
Yes, I have.  Fasting blood sugar was 104 and Dr. said he thought it was the meds.  I have lost over 65 lbs. so its not my weight.  Also steroids can raise blood sugar.  These poisons affect every part of our bodies.

Thank you so much freeme! I too have lost weight and had 2 awful reactions to steroid injections in my joints! I feel better reading your response! Hope you are doing well!

No, sadly not doing well.  I need more steroid in my spine but too scared to get anymore.  Also have them in knees and they didn't really bother me.  Who knows, hope you are getting over your reaction to the steroid injection.

Oh yes! Mine goes from 150 one day to 45 and I have to drink juice to bring it up. I've never been diabetic or had these problems until now. Benzos wreck your whole body!!! You're not alone  :smitten:

I am in the same boat. I thought I was becoming diabetic. My blood sugar is higher than it has ever been. Used to be my morning fasting was 75 and now it is 97. If I take it 2 hours after I eat it is at least 140 or above. I finally stopped taking it. 97 is still below 100 so I am hoping once my taper is done my blood sugar returns to normal.

Sorry you are not doing well, freeme. It's been 6 weeks since my steroid injection. I have made a cut since then so I never know what is causing my symptoms! My blood pressure is very low and my heart goes up if I just walk across the room! Benzos devastate people's lives! I wish I had known! I hope you feel better soon!❤️

Thanks for responding redpeach and Annie! It is so helpful to hear from others. I keep thinking I am deathly ill and will never get better! I wish you both the best!❤️

Thanks you SJS and I hope you feel better soon also.  I imagine once you are off the drugs bs will go back to normal.  Mine used to be lower also.  Now it goes up a lot and takes long to come down after I eat.  I stopped taking it also. We only have a meter because my husband is diabetic.  Otherwise I wouldn't have known what mine was to begin with. It was always fine.

Blood glucose regulation is a very common issue in WD, as is hypoglycaemia. A sudden plunge in blood glucose can bring on symptoms of anxiety and panic.

This is one reason why some people wake early in an anxious-panicky state; a significant fall in their blood glucose overnight (from not eating for a long time) causes an adrenaline reaction to pull glycogen from stored reserves.

Well not sure if that answers your question, and what others' have said. But I notice that I seem to need more sugar than I ever did!

Haven't had my blood sugar tested.

i know I read here that often docs will give brain injured people glucose to help with healing.  So I've been eating more sugar and I sure feel better when I do! Placebo? I don't know.... and it does keep the weight on.

Thanks for your input daisy and suffering! I appreciate all the info I can get! Wishing you both the best!

Hi sjs, yup I have hypoglycaemia and often wake in the early hours with my heart thumping and have to eat something, throughout the day I have to eat every 2 hours or anxiety sets in, this sure can be a bumpy ride in so many ways, we just have to try to balance things the best we can which some days can be very tricky, sending you good vibes.

Sugar and "blood sugar" are two different things Sixty. It is well known that having a "shot of sugar" can result in an immediate boost for some - but, kinda like benzos - it then causes a 'wave' an hour or so later. Simple sugars are really best avoided because they first spike, and then deflate, your blood glucose (leading to symptoms we don't like ;) )

It is best to keep your blood glucose stable by eating small 'meals' frequently, leaning more towards protein and complex carbohydrates.

There's a ton of info out there on it if you care to look :)

Hi NW,

I've looked at all that stuff trust me and had been eating a low carb, high protein diet for about 20 years before this w/d.  I know it was the way then

I understand the difference but wanted to point out that glucose is used for brain injuries and for some reason it is really helping me with this w/d.

When I was eating my regular diet, I was losing weight at an extreme rate and felt s---ty all the time.  Adding sugar, which I've though of as poison for many years and didn't even have in the house, has been remarkable.  Weird but true for me... Just to say we need to be flexible in this approach...

It doesn't even cause me the carbo crash that it used to!  weird i know... I think my brain is using the sugar differently....

Just saying...

Yeah, I'd never advocate anyone eat a low-carb diet. There are so many fads out there that backfire ;

Good luck with your spoonful of sugar - they say it helps the medicine go down!
