Most people say to get off of the opiates first since they're an easier detox and you recover from them quickly compared to benzos.  It seems like if you quit the benzos first you would be in protracted withdrawal for quite a while and it would make coming off opiates a lot rougher.  Just wondering everybody's experience is and what your opinions are.  I'm currently on 8mg of Valium and 16mg of Suboxone, so I'm trying to figure out which one would be the smarter choice to try and tackle first.  Thank you!

I would do the opiates first.  Just my opinion.  Benzos can take a really long time.

That's what everybody seems to say.  It also seems like if you got off the opiates and felt a little better being done with one med it might help with coming off the benzo.

I got off the opiates first four years ago. I was in tolerance wd from both the opiates and benzos.

I tapered the benzos and have been off of them for 23.5 months.

You can do it.

Thanks, it really does feel impossible sometimes.  Getting off a benzo is hard enough, but having to do it while being on an opiate makes it even more difficult.  But I'll do it no matter how long it takes.

I'll try to get a hold of him, thank you.

I haven't tapered off opiates, but for reference, it took me nearly eleven months to taper 8mg Valium. I'm guessing opiates wouldn't take as long so you wouldn't be on two meds for eleven months if you tackle that first.

Hi there. I haven't talked about this at all on the forum (wait, I may have once)  it's not in my signature either..

I quit 16mg suboxone cold turkey exactly two weeks before I quit klonopin. I do not recommend the cold turkey method (duh), but I always say if I can do it, anyone can. You can PM me if you have any questions about how that experience was. Much luck to you!

Wow, I was planning on taking about 7 months to get off the 8mg.  That seemed pretty reasonable, but maybe it was tougher for you.  I really don't want to wait 11 months to be off of Valium.  I do get what you're saying though that if I got off of the opiates at least I'd have one med done with.
