This new study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28596835 ..says long term benzo use increases the gene expression of Lipocalin-2 (LCN2). Lcn2 is known as an iron homeostasis-associated protein. This means benzos will cause higher than normal iron levels...

No.... In fact my levels were tested before I started to taper and were somewhat low.

I always had low iron when I was on benzos. I had to have iron infusions, but they did nothing oddly enough. I've read of some people having high iron on BB, though.

What happens in mice doesn't necessarily happen in human beings. Mouse studies are considered preliminary, according to a pharmacist I spoke with. I'd called to ask about acetaminophen and GABA after reading a study on it, and the pharmacist said that you can't draw conclusions about humans based on individual mouse and rat studies.

My hemoglobin was quite low for awhile, and I had to take a supplement to get it back up.

Thank you for posting this study. Intense read but one I will read more than once.

Coffee might be good for some things and bad for others. I don't think it's a black-and-white issue.

Yes. I was just diagnosed with Hemochromatosis this week. I have the H63D gene mutation.

I have to start having phlebotomy soon.

My Iron level is 168 and Ferritin is 163.

Actually, usually borderline low.

Many woman have low iron and benzo alone would not raise it to normal. I've had iron infusions bc my iron was so low.

My iron levels are high, and always normal before Benzo wd.  I'm at 311, was 331 1.5 yrs ago.  Went to a Hematologist, he said I have the greyhound bus of whatever moves iron around the body, so didn't think I need to be tested for this genetic disease, can't remember the name.  I went and gave blood yesterday, determined to get my iron back down to safe levels, and believe it's causing my hair loss, eczema, dry skin, weakness, fatigue, etc etc.

I have the gene mutation that has risks for high iron , but a recent hair mineral analysis showed low iron ... Not sure if htma is accurate or not tho.....I started taking so iron as I looked so pale , but I've stopped now . Probably should get my iron ferritin levels checked ....

A blood test is the best way to see what's happening. Way better than guessing!
