Extreme rage and anger

Recommended Posts

Been doing a slow taper for a couple weeks, and she relapsed on Wednesday night with klonopin (wasnt supposed to) likely withdrawing from that.

Yesterday was an extreme rage, and is paranoia common with her. She is blatantly disrespectful and as mentioned unrecognized.

She flipped out that flowers were sent to the house? My question is if anyone would have fits of anger towards their significant others like this during this time. It's unbearable.

She is not the only one. While still on benzos, during my tapers and in recovery I have experienced bouts of irrational rage that often weren't even triggered by anything. And usually not triggered by anything deserving of rage. Same thing with paranoia. Both are common symptoms. I'm sorry for both of you. I'm normally an easy going person. The benzos have made me unrecognizable to myself and everyone in my life.

My partner and I have talked about what I need when I have a fit of rage and that has made things more tolerable for both of us. For me, I need to go in my room alone and decompress with no outside stimulation, noise, conversation, light, etc. I also need to be the one to initiate conversation after it has passed. I've asked him to remember not to take it personally and if he sees it coming before I do he will quietly point out that I'm angry and end the conversation. We both know that we can resume the conversation when we are both calm again. Withdrawal from benzos creates chaos in the brain that is terrifying, frustrating, enraging, and confusing for the person experiencing it. It also creates deep depression, anxiety and paranoia that causes a lot of behavioral issues and personality changes. Please be patient with her and with yourself. Remember that this is not her as a person. This is the drug messing with her brain. It's temporary and with time she will heal and be the person you knew before.

Hello Benzobuddy9,

You are a very attentive person, taking the the time to understand the behavior of the person with whom you are without judging is outstanding. Being patient and staying tuned without going into the "game" of conflict is the key.

She is not the only one, I became violent, paranoid, angry (You can read my story for more scary details...). The benzos have made me unrecognizable to myself and everyone in my life, too. It was even harder for me because people didn't try to figure out as you do, they rejected me saying I was mad. Be her rock, be understanding, it is not really her. Your understanding will help her to heal faster. Support is the key. She's gonna make it but it's a long time.

I'm sorry if you feel that your love is disturbed.

Thank you for the kind words, these seem to be consistent with other stories. Not sure if it's a form of dp/dr but it does not align with her.
