When safe to take steroid?

Recommended Posts

Long story short, I've been having some colitis that my doctor wants to partially treat with a course of prednisone. I'm almost 5 years out and almost 4 years healed. Is it safe at this point to take a short course of a steroid? How long after healing do things like steroids affect us?

Thanks everyone!

Yes!

You could try aloe vera or colostrum as a natural alternative.  Both very healing for the gut.

4 years out and i am assuming totally symptom free, it is safe for you to take prednisone inasmuch as it is safe for you to take a short course of benzodiazepines! corticosteroids and benzos are cross tolerant. do it in the full knowledge of this. they will disturb your gaba (and HPA axis  reference). you might be able to tolerate it, you might not.

I agree with vineet. Since you were on Klonopin, which is a different animal altogether with potent and long-lasting effects (even if you did switch to Valium), I'd think about trying alternative measures first. Are you suffering really badly? I had terrible stomach issues. I'm sure if I'd told a doctor about it, he/she would want me on some sort of prescription. I chose to wait it out, let time take its course, and it seems to have gone completely away. That's not saying that everyone should do that. If you have had absolutely no symptoms whatsoever at all for a year, then maybe it's a safer bet. It's impossible to say how everyone would respond, though.

There is something called entocort which is a steroid that stays in the gut and very little is absorbed to the rest of the body. I'm not sure if it helps colitis. Maybe ask your doctor abt it?

Did you end up taking steroids already? How did it go?

What Libr says.  I have colitis too, so I understand what you are dealing with and the meds.  Prednosolone has a long list of side effects, not the least of which is mood.

I take Entocort (budosonide) 6mg a day and it has had no effect on me other than to provide colitis relief.  I (and you doctor too) recommend a minimum dose that works for you.  There are 2 reasons.  1) It is very expensive (~$600 a month for 9mg a day), and 2) it has some permanent physical side effects (buffalo hump) when taken in large doses over time.

I take 6mg a day Entocort and it keeps my symptoms at bay.  I've never felt like it interferes with my benzo for better or worse.  The FDA lists no interactions between the 2 medications.

Steroids do have a long list of side effects for anyone regardless of whether you are on benzos or not. They also can be very effective--I know I have avoided the hospital many times with pneumonia/bronchitis by using steroids for short courses. If you trust your doctor and feel you have exhausted all options, then you may want to consider moving forward. My sister has Crohn's so was on steroids for many years (which was not a great idea) but she needed symptom relief.

Prednisone is safe for short-term use to control or reverse inflammation, but there are side effects.  It can be a very strong stimulant because it is chemically similar to adrenalin.  In fact, the body thinks it actually IS adrenalin.  It can work against the effects of sedatives.  I've been on Prednisone for five years, starting at absurdly high doses and know it well.  Had no choice.  Don't take it long term unless, literally, your life depends on it.

I feel that I am a year and 1/2 recovered from a 2 year Xanax habit.

I was put on 30mg ER Rayos (prednisone) for various foot problems by a podiatrist.  I told him my history.  After the 2nd day I had to stop.  I felt I was right back into WD with severe agitation, anxiety, insomnia and rapid heart rate.  It is now the 4th day off and I still have the anxiety, and rapid heart rate; after only 2 doses.

Does this sound right?
