I'm planning to quit smoking cigarettes and I'm still in recovery and having a lot of symptoms. I'm going to try the nicotine patch to make the transition easier. If you have quit during recovery please share how it went and what you would have done differently.

Don't do it now. Its not the right time. I quit cigz 2 years before when I was in my first benzo cold turkey withdrawal (I was not aware of benzo withdrawal at that time I just left it suddenly). After 2 months of horrific withdrawal I was not aware that all of this was happening bcoz of benzo, I though may be my smoking is making all of these symptoms so I quit smoking. I was remain non smoker till next 9 months but when I stop smoking after one month I had to reinstate benzo and everything messed up.

one hell at a time....

Now I am 4 months off benzos and smoke 5 to 6 cigs a day and I know smoking flares it up a bit but not too much. I will stop smoking after 2 years of my benzo withdrawal because now I know very well that this is only xanax which is destroying me right now.

Avoid avoid avoid!!!! They always say you should never quit a bunch of things at once. Do one at a time or your body and brain will become very stressed and shocked easily and you may relapse on one or a few of the things you quit at once.

Just wait a while

Thank you for sharing. I don't want to have two withdrawals at the same time. I know it's not the right time to quit nicotine but my lungs feel horrible, I'm coughing constantly, having trouble swallowing and sometimes trouble breathing. Maybe I will just switch to the nicotine patch and stay with that until this is over. It's hard because it feels like smoking is making me feel worse and I know quitting will make me feel worse too. Ugh!

I have the same dilemma :( really really need to quit now but not sure how that's gonna be possible! Smoking way too much since I never really sleep and it's starting to make me feel like crap. I have read other posts of ppl being able to quit during WD but I know it's not going to be easy at all. I have quit several times before but this is going to be really challenging! I thought about patches too but idk if that would even help.

It's a lose lose situation I feel. Let me know how it goes if u decide to quit and I will do the same.

I'm going on the patch when my cigarettes run out. I'm going to try the highest dose patches for a while first then step down slowly when my symptoms improve a little. My skin has been super sensitive to everything lately and I'm worried about reacting to the adhesive but I suppose a rash is better than the constant chest congestion. I will let you know how it goes.

What about the e-cigarettes?  Have you tried those?

I tried them in the past. They are great for people who still want to have the action of smoking. I don't want to put anything at all in my lungs. I also don't like how much of a hassle they are to care for.

Today is my first day on the nicotine patch, step 1. I don't want nicotine withdrawal on top of benzo withdrawal so I'm going to stay at step 1 until my brain heals more. I already feel better without the smoke and I'm coughing less. This may sound crazy/strange but it's already improved my mood a little. One of my withdrawal symptoms is agoraphobia and just the thought of going onto the front porch to smoke was hard for me. I feel relieved.
