Trying to get off

I've taken Xanax randomly for about 40 years. Never consistently, until Dec of 2015 when I was diagnosed with "New persistent headache". Since I was very familiar with Xanax and it lessened the annoyance of the headache, I began to take it daily; .25mg, up to 3 times a day. Now, I'd rather deal with the headache than the Xanax, so I'm trying to get by on .125 twice a day. I had no idea such a low dose would cause such withdrawals.

Hello, Klondike5 :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

I'm so glad you decided to join the forum - you'll find plenty of information and support here. Our members have gone through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, so you'll be able to connect with others who understand what you're going through and can tell you what has worked for them.

It's great that you've decided to come off of Xanax, but it is tricky getting off since it can set of some nasty symptoms unless you taper off slowly, as you found out already. Members will be happy to help you plan a comfortable taper, though.

Based on the information provided in your introduction, the following links may be a good starting place for you to post your questions.

  General Taper Plans

  Withdrawal Support

When you have a chance, I recommend that you take a look at The Ashton Manual, which is an authoritative resource on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, a starting guideline is that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days - some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Please take the time to Create a Signature. This will allow members to see where you are in the process, so that they can better support you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the forum!

Thank you, Leslie.

There is so much information here it is a bit overwhelming. One step at a time, I guess.

You're very welcome - we're glad you're here!

It is a lot of information, but you'll find a comfortable place as you get to know other members.

A great place to start is by reading a few success stories - there really is life after benzos, and a much better one!
