I started Melatonin and it seems to help sometimes, but not always. I am taking 3 mgs and my dr said I can go up to 10, I might increase it tonite. No side effects so far for me. I would check other threads on this site and see what others have experienced, but again I am learning to listen to my body. Good Luck!

I use melatonin every night since i stated tapering klonopin. The reccomended dose for sleep is .3 mg. Most people dont realize that sometimes a small dose does more good for sleep than taking  More.  I also think you develop a quick tolerance to melatonin  . I would suggest you try a small dose and work you way up . I use the tablets that you dissolve under your tongue.  Sometimes it helps and  other times it wont unless you keep taking more during the night until you fall asleep.  It adds some more hangover effects in the am especially when added to klonopin like  i am on. Hope this helps!

I've been taking 3mg for sleep, and it's helping. It's not a cure, but I I'd rather take melatonin than yet another psych med or a z-drug for sleep.

Melatonin definitely promotes sleep.  If you want fast results, use a 1mg sublingual tablet that dissolves under your tongue.  If you don't sleep within a hour, put another one under your tongue.  Have some milk prior to going to bed, it contains Tryptophan.  Do all of the other things as well, avoid bright lights and computer screens prior to going to bed, avoid reading news or opinion that upset you.  Consider listening to some calming audio.  I find that listening to Buddhist teachings is helpful.  Helps to unwind tension and worry, at least for me.  Yes, over time if you use Melatonin every night, you can build tolerance.  It's a hormone, and when your Pineal gland realizes it no longer needs to make Melatonin for you, it will reduce production.  Here's more about the Pineal gland:

Same here, melatonin gave me complete insomnia (no sleep) at any dose. 5 mg gave me the first panic attacks in years. I would suggest using the smallest dose possible, and use it only briefly, as the body quickly builds up tolerance and decreases natural melatonin production.

Interesting article, she makes some good points, but I am sorry to say that most of that article is absolute hooey!  ::)

Not to mention a lot of shameless self-promotion by the author of the article, as well.

I think it's a great article. I am sleeping better without the melatonin.  Knowledge is power.
