Feelings of unreality.

I've been having derealization/ feelings of unreality, for over a month now. I can't take it any more. Does anyone have a solution to this???

This will go away right? I'm scared it's permanent.

I even went to my doctor and got a prescription for on brand ativan. It cost me $1250 for a 2 week supply!! That's ridiculous. If switching to on brand doesn't work, would switching to valium or something help with DP/DR?

Unfortunately derealization is quite common during withdrawal and while tapering.  Switching benzos may alleviate this, but not usually.  I experienced derealization the first three months after originally cutting my dose in half.  (also got hit with blurry vision, and stationary objects and patterns often seemed like they were moving non-stop).  This went away for me 3 weeks after I completed my taper.  After the severe "acute" phase I felt at two weeks off, I started exercising like crazy (like 1.5-2 hours daily dancing to my Nintendo Wii Just Dance game), and after 5 days of this, I was relaxing in the bathtub, and it felt like someone snapped a rubber band on my brain.  My first thought was "now what's wrong?" because everything looked "funny".  It took me a second to realize that "funny" was actually NORMAL.  My eyes completely cleared up, derealization went away, and the chemical terror feeling I had for 3 months just stopped instantaneously.  It is definitely not permanent, but it may last a while before stopping.  I found the best thing to help was to stop trying to see things normally.  Fighting it really made it much worse.  Although I still had it pretty bad, when I just accepted the idea that this was how things were going to look for a while, and even though it was scary it wasn't dangerous, I was able to cope with it a lot better.

Things that helped me were reading the books, "Before I Go to Sleep" and "Replay"  and also playing the video game Civilization VI and to some extent Heroes of the Storm.  Civ VI helped the most, and I think the reason is because it is really all encompassing.  The game just pulls you in, not right away, the first time you play there's a learning curve, but after that, it's like I just couldn't wait for my next turn.  If you have a game where you feel like that, it's really helpful to pull you our of a DP funk.  Sometimes a story, a book, or a fun time with friends can do that- just pull you out of yourself, where you lose track of time, and just have some fun,  for me, it was playing Civ VI and it just really really helped me get through some severe DP.

I got DR when I have anxiety or is in w/d. My come and goes but when I had gone cold turkey I had it NON stop 24/7 together with DP. It is scary but it will fade away...

I get this really badly as well. It goes hand in hand with anxiety so anything that helps with anxiety should help with your DP/DR.

hope your having a better day.. how far through your taper are you? I'm down to 5mg diazepam and it's HARD.

Cheers

Rory

It is not permanent. The only solution is time for the brain to heal.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm dealing with depression to right now so I could only just now bring myself to check this. I have ALOT of video games to play on my PC. So that would be a good distraction, but I've been so sad lately all I want to do is sit in a chair. Well, obviously I want to go do things, but it's a bit hard in withdrawal or feeling sick from the drug.

But it's so good to know that it will most likely go away according to everyone. I absolutely hate it. It's one symptom I depsise. And it will not stop. I sometimes wonder if I'm actually in a coma and that's why I feel like I'm trapped in a nightmare.

Oh and I guess I'm almost of the drug. I'm at .32mg right now. I just switched over to liquid titration to.

I'm sorry you're suffering too. The depression is the worst part for me. I don't do anything besides computer games and tv right now. What games do you play?

Mainly role playing games like witcher 3 or skyrim. Though I definitely enjoy RTS and Turn Based.

Nice! I loved playing WoW and Rift but haven't been able to keep up with MMOs while I'm so sick. I should try skyrim again. Distraction and this forum are the only things getting me through this. xoxo
