My husband is dependent on ativan.  Probably like so many others on here, unintentionally.  Dr prescribes.. didn't explain how much of a hold these horrible drugs have on your life or how long it will take to rid yourself of them. I'm struggling bc he's trying to quit them alone.  I'm worried he needs professional help to manage the anxiety that is left as he weans

Hello, Strugglingwife42 :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

Your husband is so lucky to have you to back him up during this ordeal - your caring this much can really help his outcome more than you can imagine.

Ativan was my downfall too, and, as it was for your husband, my doctor never told me that it could create a dependence in me that prevented me from stopping when I wanted to. Many of our members have been able to come off benzos gradually and successfully, and often without professional support for the simple reason that many prescribing physicians simply do not understand that dependence can occur even when the patient has used the drug 'as prescribed.'

Luckily, you've come to the right place for support, and if you can devise a strategy to get your husband's doctor on board to help out, so much the better.

I'm so glad you decided to join the forum - you'll find plenty of information and support here. Our members have gone through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, so you'll be able to connect with others who understand what you're going through and can tell you what has worked for them.

Based on the information provided in your introduction, the following links may be a good starting place for you to post your questions.

  General Taper Plans

  Withdrawal Support

When you have a chance, I recommend that you take a look at The Ashton Manual, which is an authoritative source on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, it is suggested that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days, and some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Please take the time to Create a Signature. This will allow members to see where you are in the process, so that they can better support you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the forum!
