Once I am completely healed, what would happen if I took a benzo on very infrequent occasions? (like once a month when I have to give a presentation to a group at work...). How long post taper would I have to wait for this to be safe (if it even is safe...)

Tks

Please don't do this. ... this is how relapse happen.  I used to get very nervous before giving a presentation but there's a very good trick to feel good and that is to give the presentation with enthusiasm. Turn the fear into excitement and you'll give one amazing presentation :)

A one time dose for a benzo for a surgery or medical procedure will not set you back, but using them occasionally can set off your GABA receptors again at any time, plunging you back into withdrawal worse than the last withdrawal.  Once a person experiences withdrawal symptoms from benzos, future attempts to get off are typically much more severe than the last.

I've taken a one time dose for dental surgery, but I'm going to need a few more procedures and I'm wondering how many "one time" doses I can get away with.

I would aim to never take another benzo. I don't know if one single dose would throw you back into W/D, but there will always be the risk of kindling or relapse.dont risk it. If public speaking is a concern for you, using a low dose beta blocker (propanol etc) can sometimes help with nerves. I've used it in the past for that reason

Some people ask for propofol instead of versed (the usually IV benzo they give pre-surgery or procedure. )

Are you truly healed if you have to take a pill to give a presentation?

Try to avoid taking benzos again.

Maybe you can practice keeping presentation by doing it beforehand in safe environment or even practice it with somekind of professional who teach how to keep presentation and talk to bigger audiences. I think it would be much better than taking benzos.

What if it was mirtazapine, Remeron, that threw you into withdrawal?  That is what happened to me.  TOok it at low dose 6 weeks, was getting sick on it, got off quickly... totally in acute... most horrible thing in my life.

Did not return to normal after 5 months so assume need to get off benzos, and have been tapering slowly.

BUT I was put on these for a lifelong sleep problem, the worst my dr. had ever seen, he admitted.  Recently went to sleep dr. he said take rstoril and go to therapy.

I don't know what to do.  Maybe I should put this post elsewhere?  But since you are not supposed to go off then back on, wondering should I try low dose restoril see how i do.

Rambling... sorry...

I had another 4 hour dental procedure this morning and I was given Halcion, which is a very short acting benzo.  Unfortunately, I would not have been able to get through it without some kind of sedation, but I'm happy to say I have absolutely no ill effects from it.  I had the same sedation a couple months ago with zero problems.

That is a very slippery slope, taking a benzo for a presentation. It's not known how quickly a person can become dependent, but I've read of people taking sporadic doses that they didn't realize would lead to dependency. I did take a benzo in the ER when my bp was up to 225, but it really did nothing for me. I took home 10 .25 mg. doses of Xanax, and started taking one again, and then again, when I had to get rid of them. Too much of a temptation, and it didn't lower my bp much, anyway.

You know it is pathetic that the only drugs for sleep are these and anti depressants or anti psychotics.  Well, for panic as well.

You'd THINK they could have come up with something better, less toxic, not addicting, by now.

Sheesh!

After what we've all been through, I can't fathom taking drugs again...if it were a matter of life or death, I'd probably choose death.

I've often read posts like these on other threads and I wonder if some people just aren't suffering as badly as others to even consider taking these drugs again.  To give a presentation?  To have a dental procedure?  These pills killed my soul.  For me, there is no choice.

I agree so faking - the only thing that I can think is the OP couldn't have had severe withdrawal like some of the others.  I have already lost 10 months of my life, been almost housebound for the last 7 months, and in so much pain I have fainted on 3 separate occasions.  I have benzos listed on all my medical form as an allergy.  I couldn't fathom ever willingly touching a benzo again even if I was dying, much less just for an anxiety inducing situation.

Of course, the problem is people have done this, their tolerence skyrocketed really quickly, and they think withdrawal won't be so bad again, that they need the benzos to get through a hard time.  Unfortunately, withdrawing again once this happens is usually so much worse than the first time around.
