Hi,

I've been on around 25mg diazepam a week for a couple of years and now have stopped and experiencing withdrawals.

Hi Verideous  Welcome to Benzobuddies

We are glad you found us,  have you tapered off safely or did you stop abruptly?.  It is not a good idea to stop taking these medications suddenly cold turkey,  It can bring on some serious withdrawal symptoms.  Anyone on benzodiazepines more than a few weeks, should taper off.  A slow taper helps keep symptoms manageable. The general recommended taper rate is somewhere between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days.

Withdrawal symptoms are awful and can be very severe at first, they do eventually ease off.  It can take quite some time for the CNS to recover.  We have many supportive and kind members here who will support you and give sound advice. Feel free to check out the forum and post to any of our dedicated threads.

I would suggest you read The Ashton Manual, It is a great resource for understanding the effect benzo’s have on our body.  It provides withdrawal information and includes a list of common symptoms

Please feel free to ask questions, members can respond with the best information if they know your medication history so I will ask you to create a signature line listing your medication and dose.  Here are the directions to do that: ”Create a signature”

Welcome aboard

Hi Magrita,

Thanks for approving me. I stopped cold turkey as my doctor is off at the moment ( I  think he's sick)  and in the past I have had trouble with other doctors at the medical centre prescribing me valium. They were like, 'you're taking too much', 'you need to come off'. And my response was, 'yes, well I'm working on it' and if my doctor has been prescribing 50 x 2mg of valium every 2 weeks for  quite a while now, it seems unfair that you won't. But they were only willing to prescribe 10 and said I would have to come back and see my same doctor when he came back.

So, I decided to just stop as my usual doctor has said that, on the dose I'm on, it would be safe to stop. It's been pretty challenging tho.
