How do I successfully make the crossover from Xanax to Valium?

I've been on a very low dosage of Xanax. (0.25) for four years and my doctor just prescribed Valium (5 mg) to switch over. He said I could just start taking it and quit the Xanax. I'm trying to stop taking Xanax completely but I'm scared this'll give me negative side effects without a crossover. Any advice?

The reason I ask is that some have trouble with valium.  Others do fine.  I didn't cross because I found I was able to taper xanax all the way down and wanted to stay with what I was used to taking.  I did have to dose 4 times a day for a while because of interdose wd.  I'm sure someone will post that has made the cross.

I think that some cross directly but have read that a slow substitution may be better.  Maybe try the valium support thread or the substitution board?  Plenty have crossed and will have some good advice.  Best of luck.
