Reflux issues during withdrawal

Hi all,

I was on 0.5my Clonazepam to help control night terrors. After a couple of years I got sick of being exhausted when waking so decided to kick the Clonazepam. Shortly before this, I had been experiencing choking events during the night. After a cold turkey Clonazepam withdrawal, I realised this was reflux. I then began and am at around 70% through milk titration withdrawal and reflux is pretty much my only withdrawal symptom.

I was put on Omeprazole nearly ten years ago due to voice problems. I now, like with the Clonazepam,  realise that this should have been short-term to see if it helped (it didn't really, I don't think). I switched to Zantac a while into my Clonazepam but that didn't seem to help, in fact I began suffering mild heart burn for the first time ever. I have since ditched both which, of course, means rebound reflux is an issue. I'm around two weeks with using only Gaviscon as I want to be without meds, if possible. It is, however, proving difficult.

Has anybody else experienced similar? Is it possible that I was suffering tolerance-based withdrawal from Clonazepam before I began to kick it?

Thanks.

Yes, I have experienced intense acid reflux during my withdrawal. So bad that I actually took a little klonopin which is the WORST idea!! I freaked out. 3 days of 24/7 reflux finally broke me down. I called my dr and she prescribed Omeprazole and though I read up about it's long term affects, I decided in the moment I really needed it. So I started that yesterday and definitely feel a bit better.

Thanks for the reply! I feel slightly less nuts realising I'm not alone!  :'(

I'm on Zantac, having ditched Omeprazole mid-withdrawal. Ten days away from total withdrawal and struggling with the reflux. Presuming it will just take time and patience!

Yeah I've been getting really bad acid reflux.. I also gag a lot - like my gag reflex is super sensitive. Might ask my doc if there's anything that can help.

Yeah my nausea kicked in hard right after I had started tapering and then had a real psycho anxious episode. It's stayed. My stool is Irregular too.. But it will get better people tell me

How far along are you guys? I'm a week from jumping off Clonazepam completely. But the reflux/heartburn has worsened as I've gone.

Sure it'll settle and now wonder how much anxiety has played a part. A lot, I imagine.

God damn benzos.

I just started getting this myself. Never had it before and I'm not eating spicy foods. I guess I can add acid reflux/heartburn to my sx list. It just keeps growing. Yay....

You're not alone. The Zantac is an H2 blocker and should work really well without interfering with your taper as opposed to protein pump inhibitors. Let us know how you're felling and I hope you get some relief soon.

I get the reflux when my withdrawals are really intense, and it has nothing to do with what I eat.  Sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night with my throat burning.  Another things I've noticed is there will be times that I can't seem to swallow down the right pipe in my throat and I'll start coughing badly.

The very same. Last night I ate half a 12" pizza with jalapeño and a ton of chocolate.  Yes, I had reflux but actually only a little worse than entirely clean day. Given I'm so tired of trying to live clean, it was worth it!

Decided to jump yesterday too at 0.035mg left.

Read the book, DROPPING ACID (hahaha -- funny title). My ENT recommended it. It's a diet about acid reflux -- what foods to eat, what food not to eat.

Based on what's said here, I'm going to change from Prilosec to Zantec. One thing I find helpful is a little bit of Manduka honey mixed with a toothpick amount  (just stick it in the oil) of Doterra's DigestZen. It's made from good essential oils for digestion. Be careful -- it's very strong!

How is Zanax different from Prilosec. I have terrible acid reflux. I burp and my stomach burns when I drink water!

Yes - the reflux can get really nasty.  I also am started to think that I was in tolerance withdrawal for years while taking klonopin.  I am starting to think that all my symptoms that I thought were part of my anxiety disorder were really just tolerance withdrawal plus lack of coping skills.  :o
