I've been tapering from about 1 mg Xanax for 4 months.  Three days ago I had  lasagna with Parmesan cheese.  I have heard about the MSG glutamate stuff but didn't pay enough attention I guess. Two days after eating felt like crap and almost took extra Xanax but held off.  It is now three days and has gotten a little bit better. I'm really hoping it's just a reaction to the cheese and will go away and get me back on track very soon.  I can't let it set me back two months tapering. Does anyone have experience  with this and how long side effects will last?  Definitely lesson learned

MSG doesn't affect benzo withdrawal... It just happens to have the same name (Glutimate) but is not related..

MSG is a no no! It's an excitotoxin and will exacerbate your withdrawal. Things should settle down in a couple of days. Try to eat as clean as possible, avoiding sugar, caffeine and processed foods. Every little bit helps at this stage, right? Sending hugs  :smitten:

There's MSG in cheese???

Aged/fermented cheeses are high in glutamate, which is a cousin to MSG. Parmesan cheese has the highest amount. Both excite the brain. Some people can tolerate them but I'm steering clear. I don't want to find out the hard way. I'll enjoy all the normal indulgences after I'm healed

Monterey Jack, Ricotta, cream cheese, cottage cheese, are fine. American cheese is fine as long as it's not processed (velveeta, kraft are processed). Cheddar and mozzerella are fine as long as they're not aged. Parmesan, Bleu, Feta, Swiss, Gouda are high in glutamate because they are always aged. Hope this helps!
