New to BB - Need help tapering after short term use

I started .5mg Xanax on 7/8 and since 7/12 I have been taking two .5mg a day. I was never told this would be an issue. I was having such bad anxiety I was willing to do anything for relief, but these drugs are horrible and I want to be done. My doctor wants me to go down to .75mg over the weekend and see how I feel on Monday. She actually had said going from 1mg to just .5mg would be okay but I'm scared. Would it be okay to go down .25mg every 3-4 days and then jump? Is there a good way to space out the pills? I really don't want to be on these anymore and I'm terrified of what to do next.

You could probably just stop. If you want be really safe, take .50mg for 2 days, .25mgs for 2 days and then stop again. You don't want to on these things much longer so if you taper, do it fast.

Thank you so much for the advice, Milton76! I hate that I started these in the first place. Didn't even know what they really were. Docs I saw were too enthusiastic to prescribe it to help me. My emotions were so all over the place I didn't even bother to look them up until after I had been taking them for awhile. My PCP is helping me taper off, just not as fast as I want to or think I should.
