Xanax/Valium Equivalent

Recommended Posts

So since he was on 6 mg a day of xanax, your saying the equivalent dose of Valium would have been 120 mg of Valium?  Is that correct?

My son has mentioned the Ashton manual to them and I don't think the even consider it.

A little history on the situation... he relapsed in Nov 2016 on heroine. To get himself off he used xanax after methadone was not helping.  Then he tried getting himself off xanax.  At that time, he told me he was taking about 7-9 pills a day so 14-18 mg of xanax.  He had come back to live w me and he ran out and had a major breakdown where I had no choice but to call for help.  He was admitted to hospital where they put him on Buspar and Prozac.  After a week he was released and he felt like he was coming down w the flu.  That night he was having shocks all over and in his brain, his eyes were completely dilated and by lunch time the next day you could see his blood veins surfacing where you don't normally see them.  We went to ER and his blood pressure was 220 over 109.  They determined he had serotonin syndrome.  They put him on xanax and in Ativan to calm him dow but the doses were very little.  We since have been seeing a phsyc where we started off on clonipen to Ativan to xanax.  He was running out of xanax before our next appt where she would have to prescribe more.  Two weeks ago I took over being in charge of handing out his meds and he has not ran short.  It has been hell on us for the past 2 weeks at 6mg a day.  We are hoping the Valium will help being that it has longer life so we can get him off all of this.  So now he is at 60 mg Valium a day. He was less agitated yesterday.

Hi Mic333,

Yes, the equivalent would be around 120mg of Valium. But if he's doing OK and stabilized on that dose, if I were in that position I might try to hold for a while and then begin tapering down. Otherwise trying to find a more equivalent dose upon which your son could stabilize might be worth considering.

I'm moving this question to Substitution Taper Plans where more members can see your question and comment too.
