We need all the help we can get.  Today, we switched from prescribed 6 mg xanax a day to 60mg  Valium

His current meds now are

1250 mg Depakote at night 500mg morning and 750 mg at night

100 mg depoxine at night

.03 clonidine per day (3 pills a day)

And  60 Valium per day

We need to get him off and he wants to be off.  Wheaton have heard so many different things... what do y'all see in how this should be done... he is and has been so agitated, angry and we are fighting constantly.  Help me understand so I can help my son and not make him any worse...

Hello, Mic333 :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

It's great that your son has you to advocate for him, as many people going through benzo withdrawal and recovery find themselves without family support.

Although I'm not a doctor, I might caution you that a closer equivalent to 60 mg of Valium is 3 mg of Xanax, so this amounts to around a 50% cut if it was done suddenly - a slow taper is recommended over such large cuts.

I'm so glad you decided to join the forum - you'll find plenty of information and support here. Our members have gone through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, so you'll be able to connect with others who understand what you're going through and can tell you what has worked for them.

Based on the information provided in your introduction, the following links may be a good starting place for you to post your questions.

When you have a chance, I recommend that you take a look at The Ashton Manual, which is an authoritative source on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, it is suggested that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days, and some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Please take the time to Create a Signature. This will allow members to see where you are in the process, so that they can better support you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the forum!
