Diazepam taper

Hello  Stut 55  Welcome to Benzobuddies!

Well done in your decision to taper off these drugs, you will get plenty of support here.  A slow taper helps keep symptoms manageable.  Reducing your daily dose by somewhere between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days is the rule of thumb.

I would suggest you read The Ashton Manual, It is a great resource for understanding the effect benzo’s have on our body.  It provides Tapering and withdrawal information and includes a list of common symptoms

Here, on the forum you will find some valuable support and information.  Our members are happy to share their personal experiences with you and support you.. Please feel free to browse the boards and post questions to any of the dedicated threads.

I'll leave you a few links:

When you can, please add a signature (history of meds/doses etc) it will help members give you relevant advice.  ”Create a signature”

Welcome aboard

Hi.  I was a Valium user (10-15mg day for several years).  I can tell you to go as slow as you need (maybe even slower than Ashton's recommendation).  Just listen to your own instincts with this taper.

I had a hell of a time when I got down to 3mg per day of Valium.  Don't become alarmed when you have GI issues, anxiety, sleeplessness, vision disturbances, etc.,etc.  Reassure yourself at that time that you aren't dying of some incurable disease as it can easily happen (I know).

There is a 3,2,1mg Valium thread if you search for it.  It may be really helpful for you when you get to that point.  Glad you are on the road to getting off Valium!  Good luck.

Stut 55 ...... WELCOME!

I agree with your decision to go reAlly slow.

There is a support group here called the Long Hold Support Group.

It is an extremely supportive and active group. I have  been part of it ever since I started my taper. I can honestly say they saved me! I didn't know what I was doing. I had no previous guidance. I was going so fast in my tAper that I created havoc and horrible wdsx.

The buddies taught me how to tAper sensibly so  I would not get bad side effects. Now I am down to .975 mg Valium from 7.5 mg and doing fine. I am living my life, back to work as a substitute teacher in elementary school and fully functional during my taper.

At least some of the buddies are always online. There is lots of fun besides the serious support that is shared. It. Is reall a great group.

The Ashton manual went much to fast for me. I only taper 5% a month now that I am below 1 mg.

The buddies have taught me to listen to my body and only taper the amount my body can handle. Rushing things will only backfire into bad wdfx.

I'm sure there are many other support groups that are equally as good and supportive.

You made a very good decision when you decided to join this forum.

I'm glad you found us!

Good luck with your taper!

Peace, healing, patience, courage and strength to you throughout your taper!

Heathcliff :thumbsup::mybuddy:

I'm about 7 Years, Xanax and Valium. I'm new here too, but I think this is a great place to get advice and share experiences.

Wish you the best!

Stut - not many people read the Introduction page. To post in an area where you will get responses, scroll down the Home page and look at the headings which are all  orange in colour. Choose one that matches your interest, e.g. General Taper. Click on that, and you will see all the threads concerning taper, and be able to post your own questions.

Good luck.

Hi folks down to 5 mgs.My question is how do you know if you are having withdrawal or just severe anxiety.Would love to hear from you please.

I have found that once you start reducing from your normal/original dose trying to figure out the "whys" is very complicated and maybe unimportant.  It is very hard to tell if what you are experiencing is situational or because of withdrawal, but I too, fall into the trap of trying to figure everything out when I feel different.

When I get down to 5mg Diazapine I am planning to switch to a liquid titration using milk.  This way you are cutting daily at a VERY minute rate.  Supposed to be a bit easier on the body from what I read here.

Good luck!

Thank you all so much for your help.l know l should not be trying to work out what is withdrawal and what isn't.l will just focus on taking it one day at a time.Again thanks.
