Used to be on Xanax, Dr. switched me to Valium to taper....but its too fast

I titrated off of the xanax a few years ago almost effortlessly by splitting it into 3 doses and going down 1 ml a day, I think but will have to check my old records.  Got almost there and then had the second phase of my horrible divorce hit....and just gave up.

Now I am really REALLY ready.  Dr. switced my to valium for obvious reasons and wants me to cut 1 mg a week.  I started at 16 mg valium, which was already lower than my 2 mgs of xanax.

I have been feeling flatlined depression that I was blaming on something else.  However, today I experimented and jumped back to 16 mgs valium and felt like my old self pretty much.

I'm thinking that since it worked before I should switch back again to short acting and do the exact titration I almost accomplished the last time.  It was so much gentler to subtract daily as opposed to weekly.  And I'm just not sure about this long half life thing...feels more like a disadvantage.

Any thoughts?  Of course, I would have to convince Dr. to switch me back to Xanax or perhaps go totally DIY and switch to etzi to titrate in the excat same way.

I'm tapering xanax and have not had the mood issues - eventhough my whole 25yr ordeal with psych meds started because of a nervous breakdown and horrific dark depression.  In fact, my mood turned great with my first (large!) cut and has remained so.

I did not cross to valium due to the reports of depression.  There was no way I would risk going back there.  After much reading here, I believe it best to taper your original benzo unless it becomes impossible.

I have not had a particularly difficult time tapering directly from xanax.  I put this on going slow and holding when things got bad.  I'm almost off now and have been doing quite well.  There were, and are, withdrawal symptoms but I think I'll be fine.

Ha...I didn't know that depression was a reported side effect of valium.  I am going to talk to him today.  the switch happened 52 days ago.  I hope switching back is not a bad idea at this point but I am not doing well on this valium and xanax never seemed to bother me.  so confusing.

what is best way to work this out?  does anyone know?  I don't want to make matters worse but just from this one reply I think going back to xanax or if impossible then etzi and dividing it into 3 doses a day like i did the last time and then cutting .01 ml a day is the best plan and get off of this long acting, deadening valium.

Maybe post a question on "switching back to original benzo" - on substitution forum or maybe withdrawal support (probably more people on that than any).  I know there are people who have switched back but have no experience with that.  As far as your taper plan - if it went well before, that is where I might start.  You can modify/adjust if need be.
