Withdrawal Regret

[Ja...]

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Like a lot of you, I joined BenzoBuddies because I can no longer handle the agony of withdrawal.  I started taking clonazepam about 20 years ago for panic attacks.  My psychiatrist at the time told me it was not addictive at the dose I was taking. (0.5 mg, twice daily).  In February of this year, my new primary care physician told me about the dangers of benzodiazepines.  In March, I started tapering off with the care of another psychiatrist.  It was easy in the beginning.  But when I reached about 0.125 mg, twice daily, the withdrawal symptoms began. The panic attacks have returned worse than I remember.  Also weak legs, dizziness, insomnia, muscle aches, and adrenalin rushes that I cannot control.  Why did I decide to do this? What a huge mistake!

Hello James177. Welcome to Benzo Buddies! We're glad to have you here. I was also started on benzodiazepines by a doctor who told me they were safe and not addictive. After it was to late, a new doctor gave me the bad news. It was also easy for me to taper in the beginning. Then, very suddenly, I was thrown into terrible withdrawal symptoms I thought would never end. The good news is they did subside, and I have resumed my taper.

Many of our members have successfully tapered even after decades of benzodiazepine use. It's possible and less painful if you are equipped with the information you need for a successful taper. There is a wealth of information on this forum to help you with that.

You may find these boards to be particularly helpful:

General Taper Plans

Withdrawal Support (during your taper)

Success Stories

You can locate our other boards with many more resources from our home page: BenzoBuddies Community Forum.

You will find stickies in bold pinned at the top of the boards. These threads contain information that our members have found to be particularly helpful. Feel free to start your own thread on the relevant board and ask any questions you may have about withdrawal and recovery.

I'd also like to give you a link to the Ashton Manual. Dr. Ashton is an expert on withdrawal from benzodiazepines. Much of what we know about benzodiazepines and successful withdrawal comes from her work.

The Ashton Manual

Finally, I'd like to ask you to read the stickies on our Community Policies & Documents and to Add a signature  before you begin to post. Doing these two things will help you to connect with our community and find the help you need.

Best wishes on your journey to health and healing,

You're very welcome, James. It's good to pay it forward. I got so much help from some very patient people when I first came on here or who knows what my life would be like now.

I hope your doctor is cooperative and will let you pause your taper or slow it down or whatever is necessary to help you get your feet back under you. A supportive doctor is like gold.
