Ativan Withdrawl

[...]

Recommended Posts

Needed more education and research about benzodiazepines. Been on 3mg of Ativan for 4 1/2 years for insomnia and Anxiety and never went without it. Had no idea that this drug was pure hell. Until My original Dr. Retired and I had to come in to see a new doctor but wasn't able to get an appointment until the following month how ever I had no refills left on my Ativan so I went 2weeks without the medicine and I literally thought I was going to die after the 3rd day I got completely sick throwing up,hallucinating, panic attacks, ringing banging in my ears jus to name a few. I had know idea what was happening I thought someone put Roots on me to find out I was withdrawing from the Ativan. So I basically went cold turkey without a choice until I was able to see the doctor. I finally was able to get an emergency appointment and the new doctor put me back on the Ativan but instead of 3 she put me on 2mg. And told me I had to get myself off the benzo becuz it's dangerous I had no idea still as to how serious this was I was sick for 3 months straight after the doctor put me back on. I decided to find a new doctor in which she explains to me as much as she new about benzoes and told me that my brain and body was in shock and it wasn't stable. She put me back on 3 mg. For 2 1/2 months  and just started my taper last week I'm still very ill and I hear about this website through YouTube . I also saw videos on liquid titration and I started that 5 days ago... I have no idea  what I'm doin I know that I feel like I have no hope and I really need help with this please!!!!

Welcome to the forum! We're glad to have you as a new member.  It sounds like you've found a good doctor now, and benzo-wise doctors can be very hard to find.

You'll find lots of information and support here.  Our members have been through all aspects of withdrawal, and you're likely to find  people who understand what you're going through. For those who are currently tapering, we suggest reducing no faster than 5-10% every 10-14 days, and some taper even slower than that.  One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper faster.

Having some withdrawal symptoms is normal, especially near the end of a taper and for a few months after discontinuing the medication.  First/only withdrawals after a slow taper tend to be easier than multiple reinstatements/withdrawals over time, which may make symptoms worse and longer lasting. The most common symptoms are anxiety and insomnia but there are many others. These are temporary and will go away in time.

Here are a few links you may find useful:

Withdrawal Support Board

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field. Section III explains and describes symptoms, and there is also a section with suggested taper schedules.

Please take the time to Create a Signature.  This will allow others to see where you are in the process so they can better support you.

Again, welcome!

You can do it. Getting off Ativan is awful stuff but it can be done. I tapered down too fast and went through acute withdrawal, but look, I survived! And you will too. I've been off almost three weeks and for the first week I honestly thought I'd die. You can do it.
