Nearing the end of my Ativan taper. I saw a new family doctor today. He was kind and more knowledgeable than past doctors I have had. He listened and made suggestions. His first suggestions were celexa, and even more, Lexapro. He said we would start on the lowest roses possible. But, he didn't want an answer today. He wanted me to think about them, research, and call his office in a week. He understood my fears about them..

Please don't be harsh or judgemental, but am looking for anyone that might be or have taken Lexapro or celexa currently or in the past. Thanks!

I would highly recommend Saint Johns wort or l tryptophan first. They feel very similar but are natural.

I have taken Lexapro in the past. I strongly recommend against it. Doctors often suggest it for benzo withdrawal, but I don't know why, since it is more likely to add to your woes than relieve them. Ashton who is the authority on benzo withdrawal says SSRI's are not helpful, and I agree. Lexapro will not relieve any of your benzo withdrawal symptoms. In fact it (and other SSRI's) may increase agitation and insomnia. It messes with your brain in a different way than benzos, so you'll feel drugged up in some other way. SSRI's are themselves habit-forming so you'll have another drug to withdraw from eventually. Withdrawal from SSRI's is more subtle than benzos - it may take longer for symptoms to appear and they may be less obvious - but nonetheless it can be serious. There is a whole form survivingantidepressents.org that is the benzobuddies equivalent for AD's. Also SSRI's have side effects such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction.

I think looking to doctors and other drugs for relief is the wrong path. Mostly getting off benzos is a matter of strength and determination and giving your brain time to heal. Healthy living - good diet, exercise - may help. I didn't find any natural remedies to be particularly helpful but at least they are not harmful like the prescription drugs.

Best wishes,

CP

Thank you for the reply..I am considering it for a couple reasons, my anxiety/depression we're bad before benzos. It has not it's height since I have started menopause.

If anyone else has information, I would appreciate it!

I am thankful for those that have taken their time to share their opinions/experiences.

I was reading somewhere that there are links of Celexa to heart issues. My mom told me about it and yet she still takes it....worries me of course. I'm trying to get her to switch to lexapro or another ssri.

Thanks for this information..not sure but I think Lexapro is a "suped up celexa" with just an ingredient removed. I am going to have to Google!

From what I can tell it can increase the qt interval at higher doses. But, not sure about what they consider higher doses I am not sure. I know it seems like they issued a warning (FDA) but in researching there is so much confusion. Some say it's ok,others not...so who knows!?!?!?!
