Hello, I was taking Ativan 3mgs a day for about 3 months. I cold turkied because the Ativan was making me feel off and physically sick. Little did I know u couldnt just discontinue this med like that. It put me in hell and im still there. The mental symptoms have seemed to have vanished but the physical sypmtoms are still out of this world annoying and very frightening. My physical symptoms consist of EVERYTHING from benzo belly, insane sweating, insomnia, heart palps, flushing, frequent urination, pain all over, chest pain and breathing problems. I've had to take multiple trips to the ER all of which found nothing said I was completely healthy but i feel sooo bad. Some of the physical symptoms have lessened and a few even disappeared I would say im 50 pecent healed I just wish this would END.

Hello Eddie19,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies!  I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time right now but everything you describe is very common for withdrawal.  You stopped cold turkey from a pretty high dose of Ativan. I also stopped suddenly from a low dose of Ativan for a medical procedure based on the advice from my doctor that due to the low dose I wouldn't have many issues. I know just how horrible it can be. If you are 50% better that points to some good healing.  This will end, but it may take a little time. When did you stop Ativan cold turkey?

I'll give you a link to the Cold Turkey, Detox, Rapid Withdrawal Board where you can communicate with others in the same situation as yourself.

I'll also give you a link to the Ashton Manual. Although it discusses tapering in detail, it also gives good information about these types of drugs and what you might encounter while going through withdrawal and recovery. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

Give it some time and your percentage of recovery will continue to increase.  Many of us had to learn the hard way just how strong these drugs are and how big an impact they have on the nervous system.  It will get better, much better.

Please ask questions, we're here to help.

Thank you pianogirl, I really needed to hear that. Its like a few symptoms will go away only to be followed by new symptoms its like a relay race they keep passing the baton onto another symptom. I went to the ER had many tests all came back fine so i know its benzo related. Im wondering has anyone experienced abdominal pain pelvic pain and frequent urination only at night during the day I urinate a few times like a healthy person should I just dont get it but my anxiety and all symptoms are worse at night so that may explain it. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've wondered why I've had to urinate so frequently as I've been coming off the ativan. I'm glad that the psychological symptoms have dissipated for you. I'm experiencing a lot of those physical symptoms as well - including the abdominal pain. I imagine they will go away with time as you've only been off the meds for 2 months. Question - do you smoke? I do and know that can make things a lot worse so I am just trying to cut down. I'm no doctor, but I know that Dr Ashton often prescribed beta blockers for people experiencing bad heart palps, high bp, and flushing. I think most people weaned off this later - but I have no idea how difficult this would be compared to benzos. I know its probably hard, but deep breathing really helps for calming my adrenaline overload and heart palps. Sometimes I have to just lay there and do it for an hour at a time - it gives me something to do, focus on, and it helps. I'm not working right now, so I am trying to do my best to manage recovery and symptoms. For insomnia, I've been taking melatonin which seems to help a bit. That and I try to tire myself out by pacing or walking if I need to. Try to cherish those brief moments when and if you do get some rest. I think it is important to have someone you can be around or talk to regularly while going thru this cus these symptoms can be very scary!! I'm sure it will get better with time, stay positive!

Hello again,

Urination issues are so common during withdrawal. Actually studies have shown that benzos affect not only the muscles that control the bladder but the nerves within as well.  I had urination issues both day and night. I knew where every bathroom was in every place I had to go, just in case, and it was always necessary.

If your anxiety seems worse at night, this can also cause more frequent urination.  I always advise people to get unexplained pains checked by a doctor, I always did.  The tests showed nothing, so I chalked it up to withdrawal.
