Need tapering help for a friend on Dilaudid

I have no idea how to tell her to taper off Dilaudid, what is the percentage of a cut per month?  How exactly does she take it so when she cuts it won't make her sick?  She has bone cancer, but it's not growing, she wants off the meds she's on to see where she really is at with her pain, not to mention they are making her sick, losing weight and hair.  Gee, sounds familiar huh? ::)

Thanks for any help my Benzo-wise warrior friends.

Well, personally I would stick to a 10% dose reduction every three-five days.  With opiates that's pretty conservative.  Given all she has been through more discomfort is not what she needs.

I have had to detox twice unfortunately and both times I couldn't stick to a taper. I just had to quit and deal with four-six days of hell.  But to me it seemed better to 'rip off' the bandaid and get on with it.  The taper was too slow for me.

The nice thing about opiate withdrawal is that the physical stuff ends very predictably after about four days.  I was always eating by day five, and by a week out it was like it never happened (except the depression, that was brutal and lasted months).

Good luck to her.

Id swap over to benzos, gabapentin, lyrica, ambien types meds for a week to get through the worst of it if she's having bad withdrawals. If she can cut the D dose every week instead even better.

Thanks for your answers.  I went off opiates CT, but was so sick in tolerance from benzos it was a month of hell for me.
