I want off benzos.  I currently take 3 mg Clonazepam, started on March 2.  Previously, I was taking Lorazepam 1 mg prn from January to March.  I'm in the process of planning my taper, buying the necessary equipment, watching videos, thinking through how to have the "I want off Benzos" conversation with my doctor etc.

Hello Edgee,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! Wow, you are really doing your homework in terms of researching benzo methods to taper of benzos, good for you.  I wish I had known a lot more before beginning my taper.  With good information, you'll find the plan that works best for you.  As far as the conversation with your doctor, I would be upfront and honest.  I would tell the doctor that I know that long term use of these types of drugs is ill advised and can bring on many undesired effects.  I might also print out the Ashton Manual and bring it along to my appointment, I'll give you a link to this manual later on in the post.

A slow taper can help to minimize withdrawal effects. Generally a reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

I'll also give you a link to the Ashton Manual. It is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

I'm happy you've decided to join our community, you'll find a lot of good information here and members will be happy to share their experience and knowledge.  I also think you've made a wise decision to come off clonazepam, these drugs work only until they don't and are truly recommended for short time use, say two to three weeks. In my case coming off benzos was the best thing I have done for my health and wellbeing. We'll be here to encourage you as you journey to be benzo free.

Please do ask questions, we're here to help.
