Suffering through this as husband and wife

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am actually the wife of someone who has lifelong issues with anxiety. He was prescribed valium 3 years ago to help. Since beginning his taper, my husband has suffered pretty much every w/d symptom listed on the various places online. We have both been suffering terribly as I try and help him through. He has severe health anxiety, so I have to read all the posts in order to filter ones that might benefit him, and not introduce any more fears. I am convinced that he entered tolerance w/d some time ago, and that these drugs have only been making him worse for quite some time.

Hello anxioususer,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies and thank you for being here in support of your husband. The withdrawal process can be very challenging for some and takes a toll on everyone involved, either directly or peripherally. My husband was my rock through withdrawal and it was not easy for him but much harder for me.

I do believe it's important to "shop" for the posts that best help, that provide the most information and support. I did this myself.

What type of taper plan in your husband using?  Generally, a slow taper can help to minimize withdrawal symptoms. A reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

I don't know if you are familiar with the Ashton Manual. It is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field. I'll provide a link for you.

Many people with anxiety found that once off benzos and healed that their anxiety was lessened. Tolerance can make it worse and it's possible to find coping tools to deal with anxiety that don't involve drugs that can cause dependency and other issues.

Both of you can receive support and encouragement here. Please feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.
