Neck spasms after 6-1/2 months

[sq...]

Recommended Posts

Just dropping by to see if anyone else found a resurgence or emergence of neck and shoulder spasms 6-1/2 months out from benzo w/d?  This was a major issue at the start of this journey but it seemed to have settled down over time.  I ask because I've been growing out my hair (it's still what you'd call a short hair style) and it's rather heavy.  Before chalking this up to the hair and cutting it off I wondered if this is possibly more evidence of CNS healing and that time is the best solution?  Things I do regularly are exercise (resuming swimming), stretching, take 500mg Magnesium Oxide and use heat and massage. [The hair is only an issue since I'm getting married in 5 months {past marriage was 37 years ago!} and a slightly longer hair style would be nice although certainly not an absolute! On the medication front the only prescription meds are Prilosec, Neurontin and Lamictal.  The supplements also include Ashwagandha 600mg, 5-HTP 100mg and 0.25mg Melatonin. Your experience, suggestions and/or support would be appreciated.  A healthy, window-filled day to all!

Muscle spasms, especially in the neck and shoulder area, can be long lasting symptoms, especially for long-term users.  This was my last physical symptom to get better, and I still have it sometimes - I always stored my tension in that area my entire adult life.  The drug which works best for me is ibuprofen, but I also use a specially shaped neck/shoulder heating padfrom Amazon, the "Sunbeam XL Renue heat therapy wrap."  It's especially designed for this purpose and though not cheap, is worth every penny.  I still use it frequently and keep several extra on hand in case they stop making them.  This pad has helped me more than anything else.

Hi SQ,

Have you tried chelated magnesium such as DRs Best magnesium glycinate?

I have a multi-fused back and bio-available magnesium really helps the neck/shoulder spasms/tight muscles. You can also get ancient minerals magnesium brine which is from an ancient sea in the Netherlands so no pollutants like mag made out of ocean water.

Good to hear that you are off the benzos. Myself, I have only dropped 1 mg out of 3 of Klonopin. I have no real pattern to my sxs, but refuse to updose even after such a long taper. I likely am wrong, but I think less poison is better even if it takes me to a very long time.

I have done this with only 2 cuts so that was likely too fast and I hope my addled brain gets caught up.

God bless you in your efforts to stabilise. Please try the different forms of magnesium as it is very calming/relaxing on muscles. Since you have a fiance' you could have him massage the liquid form into the painful areas. Otherwise, soaking in epsom salts but that is too hard for me to do and takes a lot of salts.

Research chelated magnesium and magnesium brine from ancient minerals or Swanson Ultra vitamins. I believe they both have websites and also sell on Amazon.

BTW, these magnesium products work better than soma for my back/neck/shoulders. Mag oxide is only about 20% bioavailable, but the other forms are more bioavailable.

KEEP THE FAITH!

Thanks for the information on Magnesium, I am one year and a couple of months out after ct 40 years of valium use....my main symptom is shoulder pain radiating into my neck and head most severe at night.  I have other symptoms like tinnitus dizziness, extreme fatigue, and digestive problems, but hard to sleep at night and get comfortable because of the shoulder, head and neck pain.

Hi Spazzie,

Please research/try the best forms of magnesium. Like I stated go for the Zechstein Sea derived liquid brine or get a chelated form of magnesium such as magnesium glycinate.

Try not to just get the most common form which is magnesium oxide as many can't handle it or get no relief from it because it ihas a poor bio-availabilty. Many companies try to sell you that form.

I can personally recommend Drs. Best mag glycinate and I have quite bad back problems (faied back surgeries) which, of course, are aggravated by trying to reduce my klonopin prescription of over 20 years. It really helps me. That Brand is also reasonable in price at about $15 for 240 tablets. I take 2 tablets twice a day and it helps with many symptoms but the easing of back/neck spasms is incredible in my case.

I think Amazon carries the kinds I mentioned, but I will repeat that Drs. Best high absorption (patented) seems real good, in my case. I think Amazon, DRs. Best site, Swanson's vitamins and Vitacost all carry it and others. Always look for chelated forms in oral types.

More good news is that proper magnesium helps digestive things, too.

Now, when I have # 8-10 back/neck pain (even with prescribed low dose opiate med), taking a couple DRs Best tablets can ease that pain within an hour or so. I hope it helps you.

Most of us are magnesium depleted and it helps so many digestive and neurological things it is wrong that DRs. don't clue us in. Actually, the first thing they did for me when I had a small heart attack was to IV pure magnesium into me. This is common practice and how I found out magnesium is so important and tough to get through food.

Please research and try. I also have found that Drs Best carries the best form of L Theanine (found in green tea) which also helps me focus. The form is "suntheanine". Please check out.
