Prescibed Gabapentin

I am doing very badly after 3 years off so my neurologist prescribed gabapentin. He said its the "go to drug" for nerve pain and safe to use. Now I read how horrific the withdrawals are but has helped some people. I cant function anymore so maybe I should just take gabapentin for life? God help us--

Hi Gibson, if you think the gabapentin will improve your quality of life then it's worth a try giving it a trial. I had to put my anti med attitude aside when I developed a health problem unrelated to benzo withdrawal. I'm now taking pregabalin which is very similar to gabapentin. I'm waiting on other treatments but the med has improved my pain enough that I can use my arm for light everday tasks.

Not everyone has a terrible time with withdrawal from gabapentin. In fact I would say that most people are able to taper off of it without much issue. If it is helpful for nerve pain (I'm assuming that is what you are using it for?) then I don't see any problem with taking it. Hopefully things can heal and eventually you can get off of it. I tried it for nerve pain, but it didn't help me.

gibson, I was prescribed 1200 mg of gabapentin for nerve pain. It did not help me with the nerve pain. The only benefit I got from the gabapentin was it helped me sleep initially, and then after a few weeks it was no longer effective with sleep, either. I took 1200 mg for 6 weeks and it took me 6 months to taper off. Gabapentin also me me groggy , like in a fog.

My advice would be, go ahead and try it but pay close attention if it does not help with the nerve pain w/i a few weeks, get off of it.

Good luck to you, Cindy

I take gabapentin not for tapering withdrawal symptoms, but for bilaterally trapped lumbar nerves in my back. At the times I was suffering and gabapentin was prescribed at 300mgs 3 times a day..within a week, it was a miracle! I cut out 300mgs in February and didn't feel it at all. My elderly father has had three strokes that has left him partially paralyzed in his arms and hands and before gabapentin I witnessed him walk and cry in pain. Gabapentin works great for him too.

I would advise though it's one of those meds where it works or doesn't. Also some do have a hard time coming off, others not. I know it has to be tapered too. Some have it rough, others not so much.

*This is my experience only...others might be vary. Good luck!
