tapering too soon

Ugh! I hate being in this place.  I used generic xanax about 5 years ago after going through some pretty tough times and having a lot of anxiety attacks.  It worked like a dream.  I was never warned about the side-effects and when I stopped taking it I had to get more pre-scribed and figure out my own tapering schedule.  My body is super sensitive to this drug, I learned.  I had to be very patient weaning my self off and it took several months.  Recently, I had a traumatic thing happen to me which triggered past trauma/memories AND....Yes....my anxiety attacks.  It's amazing what your mind forgets when it wants to rid itself of pain.  I should never have taken those pills again.  It helped me in my situation at the time.  However, I forgot how hard it was for me to get off them.  I was taking about 1.5mg everyday for about 1 month.  I recently got myself down to just .25mg a day and then went one day without the pill.  My reaction is that my heart is racing and I feel very unsettled.  I went ahead and took .25mg to alleviate the symptoms.  After, a few hours I feel less, but still shaky and nervous. I have put a call into my doctor (He'll be office tomorrow) to ask how to better taper from these.  Last time (I am now remembering) I had to go super slow.  Any suggestions for what to do in the meantime?  I took some Valerian Root extract and while it helped before it does not seem to be helping now.  I am without a means to go a store at the time so any suggestions need to be mindful of this ;)  Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hello, susie1234 :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

Congratulations on your decision to come off of Xanax. A number of our members have been on benzos more than once, so you'll find plenty of company and a great place to plan your taper here on BenzoBuddies.

I'm so glad you decided to join the forum - you'll find plenty of information and support here. Our members have gone through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, so you'll be able to connect with others who understand what you're going through and can tell you what has worked for them.

Please feel free to post your questions to any of the specialized boards, which can all be accessed from the BenzoBuddies Community Forum homepage. Based on the information provided in your introduction, the following links may be a good starting place for you.

When you have a chance, we highly recommend that you take a look at The Ashton Manual, which is an authoritative source on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery, authored by Dr Heather Ashton, who is an expert in the field. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, we suggest reducing no faster than 5-10% every 10-14 days, and some taper even slower than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper faster than that.

Please take the time to Create a Signature. This will allow members to see where you are in the process, so that they can better support you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the forum!
