What foods should I avoid during my taper?

A lot of people have been saying that you should avoid processed foods during your taper? That almost scares me as much as the withdrawals. Seems like everything is processed these days. I was just wonder if anyone had any advice on what to avoid, and what they would recommend eating for meals.

Starting my taper today, wish me luck  :D

It's kind of a crap shoot, in that some people are okay eating whatever they want, while others are miserable and find themselves reduced to just a few items.

Most folks on this site seem to agree that coffee and other stimulants are not a good idea, as they could rev symptoms of agitation. But some folks here swear by their coffee - just a bit - to get them moving in the morning.

Most people also prefer to reduce excess MSG - that stuff they put in Chinese food and some processed foods. MSG (monosodium glutamate) can make some of us feel pretty crummy.

I just try to eat "clean", and keep sugars low. But I pretty much eat what I want.

I cut the coffee thing about two weeks ago, I did go decaf on a few days, before I would drink two cup of regular coffee every morning. When my interdose withdrawals started I cut most all caffeine, and it did seem to help, thanks for the advice.

I can eat anything, but I mainly stick to a veggie diet. But chocolate has always been my weak point. I also sleep much better since I quit the ciggies.....

Thank is another thing I would love to quit, I ask my doctor about helping me quit smoking, but his advice, and I agree was,"one thing at a time." Did you quit smoking before, during, or after your taper benzogirl?

In the middle of my taper, but I was symptom free. I used those Nicotine lozenges which helped me a lot. I still crave them during trigger points but I chew some gum instead. My pdoc also agrees one at a time but he felt I was strong enough to try it, and so I was ! Best thing I ever did. I should never have started in the first place.

Hi Skeeter1984,

Congratulations on starting your journey of becoming benzo free today! I wish you lots of luck, strength & a smooth taper.

I agree with what has already been said by the other buddies. I would personally recommend avoiding caffeinated soda as I made the mistake of drinking a Dr Pepper last week & it sent my symptoms into overdrive. I have also read it's a good idea to avoid MSG. Most importantly, listen carefully to what your own body tells you in reaction to all foods & go from there. Last night I microwaved a fried chicken dinner, took two bites & pushed it away. All I could taste was the grease. & I used to love those dinners! Even though I'm extremely symptomatic, I can tell my brain is already starting to wake up from the benzo induced slumber because, for one reason, I've never been this in tune with my body before, even pre-benzo  :) I wouldn't restrict yourself too much though, allow yourself to still eat "comfort foods" & things you enjoy. This is a time to baby & take care of yourself!

I wouldn't stress too much about the smoking; you're working on getting off benzos right now & that's plenty! The smoking will come in time.

Good luck & welcome! I'm new here too & everybody is very nice & helpful. We're all here to support eachother  :smitten:

Thank you for you advice Chloe Bear, this site is very helpful, I think right now it is most important to focus on getting off the benzodiazepines as well. I'm at the doctors now about to discuss it with him, blood pressure was a little him 138/80 so now that has me stressing a bit. I'm just a worry bug I can't help it. Welcome to the site. Best of luck to us both.

I had to cut stimulants, alcohol and excess sugar out of my diet. I actually used the taper as an excuse to start eating healthier period and I'm in a better routine than before. I found anything that revved up my CNS was not worth eating. Trial and error.

Just on the smoking... -Dont go out of your way NOT to give up... I was a shocking smoker and had no intention of trying to give up mid taper... I just found i couldnt face them in the worst of my WD and stopped no prob... my first very mild cravings hit 2months later as i stabalized a bit...

Though I wouldnt recommend benzo WD as a way to quit smoking... :)

My benzo SXs are physical not so much mental, the only real no no is pizza, and too much bread or rice... or that sort of heavy gluggy stuff...

But i eat a fair bit of raw fruit n veg and nuts...

I am eating 500g of raw organic carrots for a few weeks to help my GI... -loving it...!!!

-less chocolate... :)

-coffee ok...
