Hi my name is Cathy and am looking for some help in tapering off xanax.  I am currently taking .375 mg at night to sleep (1/2 of .5 mg and 1/4 of a .5 mg).  I have been taking this dosage for about six month.  Just once a day at night for sleeping. Haven't had any problems during the day with wanting or needing more of the xanax. I have been able to skip a dose without a problem.  Recently I went two nights without taking the dosage and by the third day had rapid heartbeat and general anxiety.  At first I attributed it to another med I was taking for acid reflux, but after reading the posts on here I am sure it was xanax withdrawal.  I would like help figuring out how to get off of this stuff. I was thinking of the following schedule and would like to know if that will help with withdrawal etc.

Month one - reduce dosage to 1/2 of .5 tab (.25)

Month two - reduce dosage to 1/4 of .5 tab (.125)

At this point I am stuck.  Is that low enough to just quit taking it, or should I then try taking it every other day and increase the days in between taking it.  HELP!!  I'm a nervous wreck after the episode I had earlier this week from skipping two days.

Hi Cath!

Going from 0.375 to 0.25 to 0.125 to 0 may be a little fast.  Most of the folks in this forum favor a slower taper.  However, it's difficult to know with any certainty since everybody's experience is different.  You may be able to easily go down to 0.25.  A fair number of people find that they can make some initial cuts with little or no problems.  And maybe you will be able to do the cut to 0.125??  If your symptoms get nasty, then you can reinstate to the last level where you felt OK and do a slower taper if needed.

It's OK to feel a little bit anxious or shaky as you taper.  You just don't want to feel terrible, miss work, or feel like you have to hide out in your bed or room, etcetera.  So maybe see how it goes doing a 0.375 to 0.250 cut then adjust as necessary.

Just my opinion.

In my opinion , I think you may do well with a daily microtaper.
