I Need Help! Must Taper Off Librax After 20 years

Hi there...I am freaking out because my insurance co is denying coverage for Librax.  I have been on 3 per day for over 20 years with good results.  My Dr appealed and they denied his appeal.  Dr has agreed to write me a script for Levsin.  No instructions about tapering??  I called and made an appt to see Dr tomorrow.  I am very concerned about my level of anxiety and Dr does not want to prescribe anything besides Levsin.  I really feel like I am going to have a full blown panic attack over this.  Please help....thanks in advance.

Hello glittergirl,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! I'm sorry you are finding yourself in a difficult situation due to your insurance company denying coverage for Librax.  Librax is a benzodiazepine, mainly used for stomach issues. But it is still a benzo and stopping it may cause withdrawal symptoms.  Not everyone will have a challenging withdrawal but in order to minimize symptoms, a slow taper is recommended.  The substitution drug you doctor is giving you is not a benzo, I'm not familiar with it however.

Since you have a doctors appointment tomorrow I would suggest that you first of all read the Ashton Manual. It is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.  You might print off the appropriate pages and take them to your appointment. I did this and my doctor was willing to follow the plan. Just a warning, some doctors are not open to this but it's worth a try.

Generally, a reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

Stopping benzos suddenly is not recommended.  It can bring on strong withdrawal symptoms.  I hope your doctor is willing to listen to your concerns.  We'll be happy to help and support you through this process. Please do ask questions.
