I am having so many intrusive thoughts. Nearly all day, every day. I try to let them float away but they are there all the time. How much longer can I put up with this?

Gilly I'm so sorry this black beast won't let you be.  I don't suffer from those sorts of intrusive thoughts so I can't offer any specific advice.  Just know that I hear you.  You have dealt with this particular misery for a long time now and it seems to be more present the lower you get on your taper.  IMO, you should press on in the taper because it seems the Valium contributes greatly to your depression and those thoughts.  I know that's easier said than done and as I said, I have no experience with how awful this can be.  Sending you bear hugs and healing thoughts for relief.

Hello Gilly,

Feeling depressed and out of control of one's life is not uncommon during benzo withdrawal. Hopelessness and extreme negativity are themselves benzo withdrawal symptoms. So is the belief "I'm never going to heal." Many of us feel that way at times. But we're really not ourselves during withdrawal, and please understand that these feelings and symptoms are temporary and they WILL go away in time. Benzo withdrawal is a waiting game, and it takes time for one's brain and CNS to return to normal.  Time itself is the healer.

However, if you are really feeling suicidal, you must get in-person, on the ground help immediately.  As an international internet forum, we are not equipped to handle this kind of situation when it gets to this point.  Please have a friend or relative come and stay with you, call a helpline, or get professional help if you continue to have these feelings.  Your welfare is important to us. Also, our members, though very caring, are sensitive to suicide references, an that's why it's against the rules to discuss the subject of suicide here. Here's a link to our Suicide and Self Harm Pages, where you'll find valuable resources:

Hey gilly:

You think it will be two years to get off 7 mg? You must be having a very very difficult taper. :'( :'( What Megan said. I think these feeling are more common than we know about. I wish there was a sticky thread about this. Take care and know I pray for you. But he doesn't seem that he is listening to me. :-\. I believe once you are finally off, those feelings will go away. But two years is a long time to stick it out. Maybe I'll join you when I get below 10 mg....... :( Try and hang tough, please. And call that line if needed. And remember those intrusive thoughts are a benzo lie!!!

Intrusive thoughts are what brought me to this point with this medication. They suck and are boring. I have always had intrusive thoughts; on benzos and during my taper. Ive been dealing with it for so long that it doesn't phase me much. It important to be able to distinguish when your mind is playing tricks on you, and intrusive thoughts are always the most vulgar of your own minds trickery.

I got so bored with intrusive thoughts that while I have newer and crazier ones each day, I have trained myself to know what I really think and want.

Best thing to do is distract yourself. Focusing on intrusive thoughts, cause intrusive thoughts. Trust me.

Thanks candd. It's good of you to take the time to get back to me. I have got the intrusive thoughts more today, perhaps because I am trying to cut my meds at the moment. Thanks again. x
