Hi. I am fairly new to BB, but have seen a number of posts about the distraction method.  I think i already do that, but am wondering exactly what it is. Could someone tell me?

Usually it just means distracting yourself with something that takes your mind off looping thoughts and anxiety. When I went through my taper I did a lot of puzzle/logic books. For some it's crossword puzzles, sudoku, coloring books, etc. It's good if it engages your brain a little, rather than just watching TV.

keeping your mind busy with something else other than withdrawal through distraction.  Distraction was my best weapon of defense early on, for it was in the moments of distraction that the insanity seemed to be gone.

Thanks Travis and Benzos-r-cruel.  I thought that was it, but wondered if there was more to it.

Learning to get your mind on/off certain thoughts will help you a lot more than merely helping you thru your withdrawal.  A lot of people take these drugs because they constantly ruminate negative, anxious thoughts instead of 'living in the moment'.  As you develop your distraction technique, you'll find that you can use it whenever any stressful situation arises - even ones that occur long after you've recovered from this bento-induced mess.  It takes some time to get good at it, so don't be discouraged if you have trouble staying distracted at first.

In my opinion, this sort of mind training is what your psychologist should have been teaching you instead of handing you pills for a quarter of a century.
