Hello. I have been on klonopin for 10 years and have had a hard time with what I think is tolerance. I want to confirm that is my problem and try to figure out a way to get off it. I tried the ashton method but it is too hard. My symptoms are pretty bad at this point.

Hi Freewilly  Welcome to benzobuddies,

You will get plenty of sound advice and support from our caring community.  The rule of thumb is to reduce between 5/10% every 10 to 14 days.  If you feel that Ashtons method is too fast, you can taper slower, whatever rate you feel comfortable with. You might like to check out the Titration method.

Like you I reached tolerance, I was very symptomatic before I even began to taper. The problem with benzodiazepines is that at some point they become ineffective at the present dose, that’s when tolerance is reached.  It takes more and more to achieve the original effect. That gives us 2 options, keep taking more or taper off!

You are making a good decision for your health, you can do this!  Withdrawal is tough but you will get through it, symptoms will ease off over time.  We have a great bunch of people here who have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, and will share their experiences with you.

I will leave a few links:

“Professor Ashtons Manual”

General Taper Plans

Titration Taper Plans Board

For support with any symptoms post here: Withdrawal Support

If you would be so kind as to add a signature (history of meds/doses etc) it will help members give you relevant advice this link will show you how to ”Create a signature”

Welcome to the community FreeWilly.

I can completely understand how hard it is to taper down with Klonopin as the pills are so big for the dosage.  Certainly look at the Ashton Manual for gradually switching over to Valium which is a better Benzo to taper with as it has even a longer half life than K.

The best piece of advise I have during the taper is to go absolutely  no faster than recommended on taper.  It takes time for sure for your brain to re-wire.  I am still trying to taper off the last bit of Valium but keep setting my self back by trying to jump off too quickly then having to re-instate.  Key to success is "Slow and Steady".

Great people in here for support as well.  Just know that basically anything your feeling is something someone else hear has dealt with as well so know you are not alone.
