need a summer job, but should probably just heal?

I haven't been working since I've been withdrawal. Sometimes I am feeling better and I am entertaining the idea of looking for a simple seasonal job. Sometimes I feel like I'm up for it, sometimes I don't. Sometimes it seems like it might get my mind off things, sometimes I think it might stress me up.

I am living with my parents so I will survive either way. I'm bless for that and not complaining, but since I lost so much money throughout this, I am anxious and nervous and want to start saving. I'm 35 and have no retirement.

I wouldn't even be able to get a good professional job right now, and would only be able to do something simple ... like washing dishes or something... part of me thinks I should just try and focus on healing then taking a job I hate. Because once I heal properly, then I can really get back out into the world.

Anyone else going through thoughts like this or in a similar situation? Advice.

I'm beating myself up over this and just thinking, it is stressing me out, and it seems pointless.

Healing is almost a full time job in itself.

I've been thinking exactly the same thing. Being without a job is starting to drive me a little crazy. My days are blending into each other.

On my good days, I feel like I could work again. But on my bad days, which there are many, I feel really fatigued and generally crappy. I can't help but question if I could even handle an 8 hour day of work. My last job is what drove me to taking benzos daily again after getting myself down to sporadic use. I'm not good at handling stress.

I wish I had something constructive to add. All I can say is that we'll get there eventually and have our normal lives back. I'm probably going to wait a little longer. It might not go so well if I try to run before I can walk, so to speak.

I know what you're saying, as I've been there - but I think, for what it's worth, that it would be good for you to get a simple job during the summer..

Your parents will appreciate it, and it will look like you're doing something positive to help yourself, which would be true..

It will help take your mind off of your symptoms and how screwed up we all are from this experience.

It will help your self esteem..

I'm usually a teacher, but as this experience turned me into a dunce, I took a "lesser" job in a school this year, and it's been humbling, but it has also done me a lot of good..

Just my two cents.. good luck!!!

Hi,

I have worked full time thorough the entire withdrawal process.

Some days, specially in acute I wanted to quit, go into a dark cave, and hide from all noise until I felt better.(This was not an option, I provide for my family, my wife is a homemaker and we have a 1.5 year old).

However, some other days I felt that my mind improved little by little and doing something I was unable to complete the day before always felt like an amazing achievement.

Oh and the feeling you get on payday, knowing that you fought for every dollar earned is amazing  :)

God Bless you and Good luck with whichever decision you make!

As someone who has had to work throughout this entire ordeal, I wish I could of taken a break to just heal. Since you have the opportunity, I'd personally just stick with what you are doing. Stress can cause flareups and it's very difficult to get through a day of work while you are in a bad wave.

Still tapering but had the same debate as well. I choose to take the job and was quite surprised it's been the right decision for sure. Huge distraction and brings a sense of purpose back for myself. There was a time where I definitely wasn't employable but going back stressed the hell out of me.  Actually It's believe helped the transition to being semi social at all again. It's a kitchen installation job and I'll be doing nursing school in August so also looking forward to being healed someday and working a job I am passionate about too. Keep it up!

If you have the ability to get PT work I'd suggest you try it. Think of it as a reverse taper to a full time job.

I was working a few nights a week during my taper and it helped to get out of the house and out of my own mind. Plus when I got a full time job 9 months later I wasn't so uncomfortable dealing with people.

I agree with what some have said: it gives a sense of purpose to your self and can feel like a series of meaningful accomplishments. I believe it can help the healing, rather than hinder it. It's good to be in a routine, plus making money is a reward in itself!
