Not enough meds to continue taper!!!!

Recommended Posts

I made the biggest mistake this morning and I am TERRIFIED. As I was taking my morning dose of Xanax this morning, I had set the bottle on the bathroom counter (I keep the meds in our medicine cabinet in the bathroom bc I have small children), and hit the bottle with my arm and the majority of my pills landed in the toilet!!! I counted and have enough for 1 mg per day until my next refill.

Do I call the doctor and honestly explain what happened and risk him thinking I am drug seeking and over taking my meds, or just try to survive on 1 mg or day now? I'm sure doctors have heard every excuse in the book from people trying to get more meds and I don't want to risk my script being terminated altogether!

What do I do????

You just made a cut and your taper is aggressive so far but you're hanging in. So I'd either bite the bullet and cut that .25 percent down to 1 mg which you say you can manage with the amount of pills or definitely call the doctor and explain. I'd go with option number two because it's Xanax. Unless you have a history of abuse this could happen to anyone. My dog about six months ago got my bottle of synthroid that I'd just picked up from the pharmacist. It's not Xanax but still needed a full refill. After rushing the dog to the vets (he was fine) I phoned my doctor to explain. Lol they were more concerned about the dog. I was lucky it wasn't Valium or something as dogs apparently take about 20X a human dose of synthroid anyway. Still they made him puke. In short...if you have a dog...beats the old I dropped them in the sink or toilet by mistake. Honestly all they cared about was the dog! Frankly so did I. If no dog just tell the truth. It happens. B

If you have never done this in the past (seeking out extra meds), then really they have no reason to be suspicious. I'm mean accidents do happen.

No, I have never done this in the past. I went ahead and called the dr and was able to speak to the nurse. She seemed very friendly and just said since it is a controlled substance I would need to come in for a "med check" and that they can see me tomorrow. I don't know what a med check is, but with them wanting me to come in, I guess that's hopeful. I'm assuming if he were going to terminate me or not replace the lost meds, I would've just been told too bad over the phone.

Has anyone heard the term "med check?"

Never heard of it but I know some doctors strangely do blood tests. But often they're so unreliable I can't imagine that's what it is. Probably just don't want to call or fax it in. Just give you the script in person. B

All my pain med appts are med checks. They may do a pee test maybe not. But definately want to hand you a paper rx.  Beware, the pharmacy may balk at filling it

Yes, that's one point I'm going to bring up to the dr. I did call the pharmacy and ask what to do in this type of situation and they said they would fill with an authorization call from the doctor, but insurance won't cover it early. I might ask him to write the script in a different way so that insurance doesn't reject it. Idk. I'm just going to be totally honest and let it play out. My dr is very cool so I think he will give me the benefit of the doubt. But, ya never know. I'm sure they've heard it all.

If you have the pharmacy write in extra  early refill for vacation you can mail the receipt into the insurance company for a refund. At least here you can. Either way the important part is getting the refill. B

It really depends on what the doctor is willing to do. The DEA is on the behinds of doctors these days. I've gone into the er with a cut off thumb tip and given tordol one day and given oxycodone for a headache the next. My current PCP wouldnt write me back on  Klonopin after I was suffering from a bad reaction with valium even though I said I would surrender the whole bottle because it would "endanger his liscense." But my doctor back in my old home town put me on Klonopin when I first started taking benzos immediately after he wrote Xanax because I explained to him I felt like I had to keep taking more Xanax to remain calm and he didn't even ask about the remaining pills. It all comes down to the doctor.

Yeah, I'm almost wishing I hadn't called and said anything. The last thing I want to do is tarnish the relationship I have with my doctor. Even tho nothing like this has ever happened before, I just feel like it raises suspicion. Maybe I should've just dropped it down to 1 mg per day and suffered through another cut too soon. It's too late now. My appointment is at 1:30 tomorrow and to cancel would look even more strange. Worst case scenario, he just doesn't believe me, cuts me off, and I'll be doing an extremely rapid taper with what I have left. That thought scares me to death, but I guess it's a very real possibility.

I honestly think if he wasn't going to hand you a script you wouldn't be going to see him. They simply would have said so on the phone. Just covering his backside by seeing you rather than calling it in. B

It sounds like your dr and pharmacy are being understanding. The insurance co may notbut i dont think its that expensive

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I'll post tmrw and give an update on what transpires! Keep me in thoughts and prayers!

Generic Xanax is very cheap.  I wouldn't ask the dr to do anymore than replace the lost pills tomorrow.  Just pay for them is my suggestion.

He can't cut you off completely. That's medically irresponsible. The pharmacy can't do an early refill unless he writes a higher or lower dose so be prepared for that to happen. He may write several lower mg or a few higher mg just be responsible with what you have if he gives you a larger dose pill.

He wouldn't be "cutting her off".  She's asking for extra pills.

Any responsible doc is going to be cautious about writing scrips for "extra" benzos.  Indiscriminately writing extra scrips would be "irresponsible"

If she has a trusting relationship with her doc, he will most likely give her benefit of doubt.

I was referring to her fear that he will stop treating her after this.

Dont you doubt yourself...pls... The Dr will know whats drug seeking and what isnt... no doubt...

I know this story well for oxy... Dog check... sink check... me taking twice what was prescribed to do what I needed check... -never the toilet though... oh and extending a holliday by a month check...

You will be fine, dont stress... -I think you did the right thing in every aspect...

And the other posters covered everything well...

Thanks everyone. Of course, my anxiety is through the roof this morning about this. I think instead of just waltzing in and asking for more pills, I'll just ask what he advises me to do and let him make the decision. I'm going to explain to him I understand the seriousness of the situation with it being a controlled substance and just let him take it from there. Not much else I can do at this point.

I do agree that it would be weird for him to pay money for this appointment just for him to say no when that could've been done over the phone. But I guess he could bring me in to terminate me. Idk.

I really doubt he is bringing you in to terminate you. Relax

Thanks. I guess the part of my personality that required treatment with benzos is rearing its ugly head about this situation.  :idiot:

If you know how many pills you lost, ask him to just replace those and continue your taper. I think he should know you are tapering.

...And he wont get paid if he does... lol...

He probably just needs to be able to say he actually saw you, possibly check your BP etc...

Remember these meds are far more about physical dependency than actual drug seeming addiction...

All will be well... -breathe and hydrate... :)

a "med check" is for billing and insurance purposes.  The office has to submit a reason they are seeing you and a medication review and adjustment is a legit reason.  My doctor has categorized my visits like this before.  Yet another reason to get off controlled substances like benzos, when the supply becomes threatened in any way it is panic time.  Many of us have been there!  Relax FBW, it will be fine this time.
