Interested in tapering off Xanax

Hi, I found this group as part of a comment on Amazon in regard to a book about withdrawing/tapering off benzo's.  I have been taking Xanax to help get me to sleep since  around 2005.  There was a point where the .05 mg wasn't helping keep me asleep very long and my doctor at the time saw no issue with increasing my dose to 1 mg.  So I take this before bedtime and it gets me to sleep for a solid 4 hours typically.  But, of course I've since learned that my body is physically addicted when I ran out of my prescription one weekend and I experienced weird brain zap and a general feeling of being "off".  After putting two and two together I realized it was the lack of Xanax that caused this horrible sensation and it was shock, surprise and disgust that I realized I was physically ADDICTED to this medication that seemed so harmless.  So I would like to learn how to safely taper off Xanax, that's why I'm here.

Hello VioletLight   Welcome to BenzoBuddies!.

I am glad you joined, you will receive plenty of support here.  I wasn't told about the addictive nature of benzodiazepines. like you I learned the hard way. Your going to be okay, withdrawal can be tough but you will get through it.

The best way to minimize withdrawal symptoms is a slow and careful taper.  It gives your central nervous system time to adjust to each reduction.  It is suggested to taper no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days.  This can be adjusted based on how you feel.

We have a great bunch of people here, our members have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, and will share their experiences with you.

I would suggest that you read the Ashton Manual, an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. It was written by an expert in the field.

I'll leave you a few links:

If you would be so kind as to add a signature (history of meds/doses etc) it will help members give you relevant advice this link will show you how to ”Create a signature”

Welcome aboard
