Mirtazapine weight gain

I just give up on trying to lose weight.  Since I went from 7.5 to 15mg all the watching what I eat and exercising does it keep the weight gain happening more slowly.  Went out to celebrate my anniversary and WOW the scale CAN move!  Just never in the downward direction.  Im so depressed, this is the fattest I have EVER been.

Still tapering the K but I am hoping this weight will come off once I taper the mirtazapine

Yes, unfortunately it can really pile the pounds on. It messes with your metabolism via the insulin/blood sugar system. Insulin is what makes you put on weight. The only thing you can do to counter-act this is to eat a low-carb diet, to try and keep insulin levels down as much as possible. One failry easy way to do this is to eat basically no carbs for lunch and breakfast, and count the ones you have at dinner.

When you finally taper off, the pounds should come off fairly easily, but once again lower carbs will help.

I had lost 80 pounds then I went on that last June. I gained fifteen pounds instantly and went off of it. But I could never get a healthy eating habit again. It restarted my craving for sweets and carbs and I gained another fifteen pounds since. It really suck because I slept so well with it.

I took 15mg of mirtazepine nightly for about 6 months several years ago. Within those 6 months I gained 70 lbs. After stopping the Remeron I lost all the weight within 2.5-3 months.

3 years, 30mg/day, zero weight gain.

I also have not gained weight on this drug (and almost did not take it because of the reputation as a weight-gain drug), but did when I was on lexapro, which unfortunately is still on me. I also know I cannot do low carb and I am sure that may be problematic for others as well. It shot my anxiety completely off the charts when I tried to go low carb. It's depressing but I do workout regularly (and vigorously) so even though I am overweight (I should lose at least 50 pounds sadly) my blood pressure/cholesterol, etc. is all fine, and I noticed when I was shoveling snow all winter I had more stamina than my thinner neighbors.

I am going to try to start this weekend with prepping healthy meals on the weekend and hope that will help somewhat. I feel like everything is a trade off and we all have to decide what is acceptable.

Wish I could not gain weight.  My triglicerides were way up I haven't had them checked recently because I really don't want to take the statins the Dr wants me too.  Plus I was on blood thinners at the time so I couldn't even take fish oil.  I try to work out but so much pain, have been swimming pretty regular, will try to take my bike out again as soon as I can.  But yep if I could at least get healthy that would be great.  And I just hate wearing clothes cant find anything that fits

Hi Tinwi,

I could have written your post myself!  I'm pretty convinced the reason some gain weight on mirtzapine and some don't is related to our genetic profile.  I gained 20 pounds immediately after starting mirtazepine and it was/is pretty depressing.  I was thin my entire long life until mirtazepine.  Like you, I've been exercising most days during my taper and the weight didn't start coming... until recently.  That's the good news.  You will eventually start dropping it, too.  I tapered the mirtazepine about 18 months ago, I'm almost off the Klonopin and the weight is finally starting to drop.  I spent a lot of time feeling anguished about the weight gain which caused me to self loath... people would comfort me and remind me it would come off eventually.  They were right.  Please try to be gentle with yourself about the weight gain, you're doing all you can do to stay healthy and once you get off the mirt and benzo your metabolism and cortisol levels will normalize, and the weight will fall off for you, too.  😊
