How far has this set me back?

I just needed a break

I couldn't take it anymore.

I took a 5 mg rescue dose of Valium after being off for three weeks.

How much is ruined?

A one off 5mg??? -probably not too ruined...

But can you continue at 0...?

Only you will know...

But i sure hope you can, if possible...

Dig deep...

Nothing is "ruined" and you need to be super proud of yourself for being off benzos. It's still counts as being off in my book. Just try your best to push onward without taking more. If you feel this is something you can't do then I suggest maybe going back on a small dose and doing a micro taper off.

Its difficult to advise miri because your signature doesnt say how long you were on valium and/or when and how long you have been off valium. Were you off valium for 6 months and then do a rescue dose or were you offf valium one week and do a rescue dose?. Its easier to get advice if you put benzo-dose-length of time using and date of time quitting. I did a rescue dose of ativan at 7 months off and it set me back a few days ie my symptoms were ramped up big time for a few days afterwards. Dont be to down on yourself and just try to be sure not to make a habit of rescue doses because after to many rescue doses you will be back at square one and need to suffer this misery all over again. Im at ten months and have started to notice real improvement. Time is all we have as a healer. Hang tough miri! U got this!

Thank you for your reply

I feel like such a fool after fighting for three weeks.

You asked how long I have been off and it's three weeks.

The physical symptoms have been so hard and getting worse

during these weeks.

I have taken small therapeutic doses (5mg)  several times to deal with plane flights and medical diagnostic procedures.  They have never caused any problems whatsoever.

Sorry. I may have misunderstood you. You are currently back on 5 mg valium stabalising correct? So you went off for 3 weeks and then did a 5 mg rescue dose? And then that led you to staying on the 5mg for now? I thougnt you were STILL off the valium and then took a 5mg rescue dose and were concerned how that would affect you. I somehow didnt notice your signature that plainly states you are still on the 5 mg dose and stabalising. I was trying to advise you as if you were currently on nothing- so my bad. My cognition is really messed up so my apologies. Also-you were on valium for 15 years? Thats why it wasso  difficult NOT to do a rescue dose when you first stopped for those 3 weeks. Thats quite a long time to be on valium. Anyway-glad ur stabalising on the 5 mg and wish you luck when you decide to jump!

Depending on how long you were on valium and what dose, i'd say you're fine

And how many rescue doses..........

Sorry. I just found out my profile was wrong.

I have been on zero Valium for the last three weeks.

I have taken one rescue dose of 5mg yesterday.

I am scared because I don't know if I have ruined everything.

I think you will be OK. Klonopin is very long acting and although you will get better quicker if you stay at 0 that one low dose has not done damage but instead just adds more time until your gaba receptors can regulate back to normal. I would not worry about it but if you keep doing this, you are just delaying your recovery.  I hope you feel better soon.

I sure understand the worry, and i remember posts from a while ago... If you possibly can, dust off and keep healing at 0...

If not, I guess its lowest dose you can hold at, stabalize if possible, and Slow taper by sx till free Again...

But each time you might find it gets that bit harder... -and if I remember right, you have reinstated a few times from low or no doses...?

Try real hard to make this one count, which im sure you are...

You CAN do this...

Youll be fine I believe. That's technically what these drugs are meant for: rescue from panic. But since your brain is still recovering you probably didnt do it a favor but I doubt you flushed everything down the drain. Just don't make a habit of it because we just broke a habit haha

And if this happens again try 2.5 mg of valium (the lowest therapeutic dose) or maybe a low dose of a different benzo that doesn't take ages to build up in the system. Not a doctor but it's what I'd do. Hang in there you're doing wonderful!

I guess one rescue dose doesn't cause a build up in the blood?

At least not with valium. It takes me forever to feel anything but sleepy on it which is why I swapped back to Klonopin. I was on Valium for 5 days before it relieved my anxiety. Valium itself stops working after 2 hours and has a half life of 24 hours while it's metabolite is what has a 100 hour half life. Like we said, you shouldn't see a drastic setback.

One rescue dose should not cause a problem
