Hello everyone,My doctor decided in january to take me off off xanax, i have been on them for over 8 years for anxiety. since january ive went from 1-2 1mg xanax down to a a half of a .5 mg xanax, and im supposed to be completly done by the beginning of may. its been rough to say the least. I also take antidepressents. my doctor is a new dr.and hes strict, but i do like him. his reason for taking me off of xanax is because they were not ment for long term use.looking forward to hearing others stories.

Hello, beautifultrees  :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

Congratulations on your efforts to stop Xanax, and well done tapering down so far already! It's great that you like your doctor, and he's very wise to counsel you on the risks of staying on benzos longterm.

I'm so glad you decided to join the forum - you'll find plenty of information and support here. Our members have gone through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, so you'll be able to connect with others who understand what you're going through and can tell you what has worked for them.

Please feel free to post your questions (from above) to any of the specialized boards, which can all be accessed from the BenzoBuddies Community Forum homepage. Based on the information provided in your introduction, the following links may be a good starting place for you.

  General Taper Plans

  Withdrawal Support

When you have a chance, we highly recommend that you take a look at The Ashton Manual, which is an authoritative source on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery, authored by Dr Heather Ashton, who is an expert in the field. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, we suggest reducing no faster than 5-10% every 10-14 days, and some taper even slower than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper faster than that.

Please take the time to Create a Signature. This will allow members to see where you are in the process, so that they can better support you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the forum!

Welcome!! Benzo buddies is a great place to come for support. I found them half way through my taper off xanax after 30 years- and the people here were a godsend. The support, advice and friendship from others who understood what I was going through made all the difference. You have already come along way in your taper- you are in the homestretch! You will be so happy to be free of the xanax and the hold it had on you. I feel so relieved to no longer worry about my next prescription refill or if my doctor would stop prescribing it. Best of luck to you.
