Can melatonin worsen depression?

Have tried it for sleep. Have been suicidal the last few weeks since being on it. Sleep completely trashed, worse than ever.

 

Has anyone else experienced melatonin making them extremely depressed?

I recall melatonin not working when I started the taper, and recall the horrible feelings I had. But after I stabilized somewhat with the taper and did the partial valium substitution, that same melatonin started working again.

 

Before taking any benzos,  melatonin was a Godsend. I'd take a 1mg occasionally when I had trouble falling asleep, and there were no depressive effects at the time.

For most people I would say that melatonin is marginally effective for sleep at best. Depression is made worse by lack of sleep and you are probably going through a spell that is too strong to be helped out by melatonin. When exhausted and plagued by suicidal thoughts, it is best to have someone to talk to. There probably is a suicide crisis hotline in your area that you can find the number to and keep it handy. My wife used to volunteer for our local center and she said that most people just needed to have someone to talk to in order to get through an extra hard time. Just don't let a temporary problem blow up and lead to an extreme and very permanent solution.

Melatonin has a few minor side effects , it's a methyl donor, and screws your circadian rhythm.. But you probably already don't have one of those if you're in benzo wd and it's the most benign of all the sleep aids. It's at the bottom of the totem pole. I use melatonin to get off of benadryl , and I use benadryl to get off of something else or taper a benzo.

When things were at the worst for me with the insomnia, I noticed that the melatonin would certainly make me more depressed. I would also like to point out that it was not that effective most nights. If I happen to take melatonin on a night where I didn't sleep either, the depression was tenfold. I have read that melatonin should not be used every night and is technically not a sleep aid. it is more of a sleep 'clock regulator used to readjust to normal sleep cycle .Study show that taking in every night can actually worsen insomnia in the long run , causing the body to not to produce its own naturally. But in summary everyone reacts differently ,and I have read some people have had success using melatonin for many years. I am not one of them. I take belsomra and inositol and that works for me now.
