Cognitive damage

Hey guys

I'm now over 10 months off benzos but I'm still dealing with some pretty severe cognitive deficits. I've seen maybe a 10% to 20% improvement in my memory from my acute phase but almost no improvement in my ability to articulate my thoughts. It's almost as if I have a speech disorder or something. I also have a tough time watching shows on tv because I cannot follow the plot. Just curious if anyone else is this far out and suffering similar cognitive damage as me?

I know I'm better than I was in my acute phase but progress has been slow recently and I'm beginning to think I'm going to be stuck in this stupor state for eternity. It's annoying because I can't socialize with my friends or family with these cognitive deficits.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Unfortunately, healing from withdrawal can take a lot longer than we'd like, a year or more for many of us.  But, the fact that you have actually seen some improvement bodes well for your future healing.  This does not last forever.  Each of us seems to have one or two symptoms that hang on longer then the others, for me it was head congestion and cog fog.

Hang in there!

I'm 17 months out and am still having cognitive issues.  It is almost a chore to watch TV because I can't think straight.  However, I am seeing some improvements from what it was a year ago.  Improvement is just not happening fast enough for me, however.

Yup, welcome to the club. I wouldn't say that my cognitive abilities have decreased so much that I would classify it as damage, but there is some impairment for sure. I don't have any problems following the plot of movies or TV-shows, it's more the visual stuff that hinders me to do that. I feel as if my cognitive abilities have decreased somewhere between 20-30% since I started experiencing benzo withdrawal. I don't worry much about that, though, since it's one of the most common symptoms that people report.

I noticed in your signature that everything appears 2-dimensional to you, I have that symptom as well, it's really annoying.

I used to have a problem following the plot. Now i'm aware of the plot.. 34 months later. But i have a difficult time following conversations still. Its a side effect of having  too much Glutamate vs gaba
