Buspar (Buspirone) question please...SOS.

This is going on posting multiple times with no answer. Tapering from Ativan. Tried Buspar when I cold turkey from Ativan before reinstating and now tapering,  but I only gave it about four days I was in such a mess. I know the Ashton manual is against it, many say it doesn't work. But given what I feel like, I am willing to try Buspar again.

Has anyone tried it, and been at least somewhat successful?

What is the reason not to? If it is even a little bit of relief,  then that is positive right! Does it act on the same receptors, stall healing?

Buspar is a very mild anxiolytic, and it generally is NOT effective for folk who have been on benzos.

But it is very safe med with few, if any, side fxs, and no risk of dependency.  There is probably no real risk in trying it.

FWIW, I took Buspar for about 3 months, escalating all the way up to 60mg/day.  At best, it provided only slight relief, and only for an hour or 2.

I also tried buspar and it had no side effects for me...I thought it might be helping at first but after 3-4 months I realized it wasn't doing anything so I stopped. It was not hard to go off so there would probably be no harm in giving it a try- maybe you would have better luck with it. I was on xanax so long I  think buspar doesn't work as well for long term benzo users. Best of luck.

Thank you...Maybe no harm in checking with my doctor and trying once again. At worst, I feel no better.  Maybe being on them 8 months including a month off and tapering for a while will give me a hopeful point that maybe Buspar might work.

It takes the edge off for me. Give it a try.

Shaftoe, thank you. I figure it cannot be any worse than the benzo we breaking free of. Worse case scenario, it makes me feel worse, best case, within a few weeks I make some headway. I did try it once, but only a few days and I gave up. I kick myself everyday for not trying to longer and making the poor choice of going back on Ativan. I see my doctor in a few weeks, so maybe I can taper a little more and try it again.

My experience might be a bit different than most.

I've tried buspar on its own to no effect

but I've also tried buspar when I'm at benzo tolerance and it's no longer working for anxiety, and found a profound effect.

At first it made me a little dizzy, but it took the edge off the anxiety. It still reduces my energy level so I take it mostly at night or when I don't have to be real active.  it usually helped my anxiety and chest symptoms.

Now that is interesting, and gives me some hope! I know the first time I tried it I only gave about four days, and gave up. I was on my first cold turkey off Ativan. I gave up on the Buspar, eventually only a few weeks later to be reinstated at a higher dose of it. I am ready t ask my doctor about it again. Hopefully he will be receptive when I go in two weeks.

Thank you shaftoe for sharing with me. If you don't mind answering, what is your typical dose amount?

Buspar works on serotonin receptors as far as I know. I've tried it and it didn't seem to do very much.. is a very mild drug in the grand scheme of things. Hope that helps.

Thank you. Compared to benzos that we have been dealing with, I am sure! Willing though to give it a try. Don't see much negative other than it not working, then no worse off....Maybe.

As far as I know Buspar is a hit and miss type of drug. Dr. Ashton said she didn't find it of any help during w/d. I have read though that some people do find it helpful. That tends to be true of Buspar in general. It either seems to help or it doesn't do anything. I was on it before I was on Benzo's so I don't know if it is helping at all with my w/d anxiety.

I'm currently taking 45mg and I take most of it at bedtime because it makes me really dizzy and drowsy so it might help you sleep  :)

Good luck  :smitten:

Hugs ,

I take buspar 30mg daily. I tried it when I was tapering but it gave me the jitters. I started back on it when I stepped off Xanax and it has worked great for me.

I have experience with Buspar too.

I found it to be a waste of time with no relief for I have severe anxiety.  It is usually helpful for people with mild anxiety.

There are tons of threads on here about it.

It wouldn't hurt to try it though for it is very easy to stop.

Interesting story. I took Buspar brand name and was really excited when it went generic. Turns out the generic didn't work at all for me. Something to do with the delivery system being different than the name brand. I have severe panic disorder. They sold the name brand to another company and I'm not sure that the new company kept the same formula as it doesn't seem to work as well for me as it used to. Of course all the generics use a slightly different formula so it may depend on the type of generic you get as to whether it will work for you or not.

It does not work on the GABA system.

Buspirone works through multiple mechanisms and is classified as a selective serotonin subtype 1A (5-HT1A) partial agonist, with activity at both presynaptic and postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors. The drug also uniquely interacts with dopamine receptors as an agonist and/or an antagonist.Jul 17, 2014
