I also suffer from surges in cortisol. the reading that I have done says that daylight hitting your eyelids signal your adrenal glands to produce cortisol. I remedy this by setting my alarm to wake up before daylight and I sleep in a very dark room. I still have these surges but they are diminished greatly. we have to try and figure out any way to keep on until our body heals itself. I know this is a chore but what are our choices?

Yes! 16 months out and I still deal with this. I wake up every morning between 3-5am with the adrenaline surging.  No chance of going back to sleep.  I've had to adjust my bedtime to a much earlier time just to be able to get 5-6 hour of sleep. I also stopped watching TV or using the computer a least 90 minutes before turning in and completely cut out caffeine consumption.  Surprisingly, I seem to do pretty good on just a little sleep but that too, is probably due to the adrenaline surges all day.  Best wishes on your continued recovery.
