Oh my god.... mother in law polydrugged and misdiagnosed! Seriously criminal.

So, i just got a phone call from my girlfriend that her mother is really sick. Seems like she got burning pain in her chest and an increased heart rate after drinking some kind of tea.

A local clinician gave her "pills" because she was just "stressed", feeling "lonely". This lady is everything except stressed, down or lonely! She's a happy granny with lots of social contact and never feeling down.

Anyway, as an obedient sheep she has been taking the pills for 3 weeks, now very depressed, sleeping all day and total different of character like a child really.

I asked my girlfriend about the symptoms her mom had before she went to the doc, to my understanding (with some medical background) it's just a case of GERD (gastroesophgael reflux disease), now misdiagnosed by some incompetent fool with no training as a mental disease.

The name of the medication is not known, she sent me some photo's but they're all generic pills. I could make out one as being propranolol 10mg and the other one alprozolam, the third one is very likely an antidepressant, the fourth one i have no idea.

I advised my girlfriend to call the charlatan tomorrow asd ask for the name of each medication he prescribed so i can help out. I feel so sorry for her mom, these doctors in Thailand are so bloody incompetent it really is criminal. I'll be heading back home to Thailand in 2 weeks, man i wish i was there when he prescribed those pills....

Anyway, my question is, what's the general concensus on benzobuddies about quitting an antidepressant after three weeks of use? I have no idea if she's already dependent on it, not knowing the name of the medication and the dose. I guess het best bet is to try a rapid taper, if that gives problems then slow it down to a rate she feels comfortable with.

General practicioners, f... useless bunch.  :tickedoff:

It is unlikely IMV that there ought to be any withdrawal difficulty from stopping an SSRI after only three weeks of use. However, it could be tapered, simply, over a week or two if that is more comfortable. This is only my opinion. It is not advice.

Three weeks is the usual time period a 'new' SSRI has to be taken for, before it is deemed sufficiently "built up" to effect a so-called "therapeutic" dose. So, effectively, it is still "new" to the system at three weeks and hasn't "bitten" in deeply yet.

All the very best :)

yep, modern medicine is a scam all along. profit driven. 'mental health' 'cancer treatment' ....sending people to the grave after sucking money out of them

my mother in law is on ativan since 2 years...told her about potential problems, tolerance w/d, taper rather now then when you HAVE TO, ....deaf ears. 'the doctor knows best'.

lady is on psychiatric pills since 20 years...antidepressants. MOST depressed person I've ever met. everything is dark....

Ok, i got the name of the medications she has been using for three weeks.

- Prozac

- Diazepam

- Propranolol

- Lovastatin

All taken at the same time! This is just criminal, i feel so sorry for her.

I will tell her to get off all the medication today, except the propranolol to mitigate any withdrawal effects. She doesn't even need the lovastatin because her lipids tested all within range a month ago.

I'm so angry at the moment, what happened to the oath, do no harm? These numbnuts destroy lives!
