Doctor was super supported when I asked to switch off 3 mg Xanax to clonazepam for the New Year. My goal was starting 2017 Xanax free unfortunately with my good intentions I hate myself I why fix what's not broken.

She switched me to 3 mg klonipin which made me angry, irritable, raging, seating and unhappy. I asked to lower me to 2 mg clonazepam and throw in some Xanax she did give me 10. 25 Xanax. Never was I trying to increase just trying to better myself.

Klonipin was an epic fail so she put me on a huge cut of alprazolam extended release .5 mg since last week. I made sure the pharmacy cancelled out all the refills and gave it a try. .5 ER  Xanax is not enough I did it for a week she told me at least try it do i did. I have been nauseous, I'm in sales sometimes what I'm trying to say doesn't come out right with words. Sensitivity to light and sound, insomnia, and major ringing in ears.

Finally I have in and called today she said she will be calling me tomorrow to talk I'm afraid of her

1) never asked for more Xanax or increases

2) can pass any tox she throws at me

3) no prior history of street drugs, alcohol

I just have an addiction to Xanax and tried to help myself. I don't want to be on it forever I'm open to a slow taper but not a 2.5 cut I'm so afraid I ruined my patient/doctor relationship I always text her the day before and remind her of our appts. She usually changes times I oblige. Never missed an appt., gave her a Christmas card, and even wrote her a nice review on Google as someone wrote a nasty one.

I want off Xanax the right way not feeling sick like this, I'm doctor prescribed reliant, am I running the risk of losing it all and getting kicked to the streets or a detox for a 2.5 cut. I'm afraid how can I explain myself to her?

Please benzo buddies hear me out been on 3 mg a day for like 5 years.....im living in fear

I think losing a prescriber is a huge fear for many of us... I has been for me anyway.  That's because my original prescriber ended his practice and my current one is just helping me out.  I think you need have a plan before speaking to your doctor.  Are you committed to being benzo free?  or do you really want to continue the Rx.  Whichever it is..dont send mixed messages.  If you want to be benzo free then have a solid taper in hand..  Ok that's my two cents.. that's what I would do.  Good luck.

I have that same fear of losing my prescriber.  They always say I need these medicines and never threatened me but sometimes the delays on getting a refill can be ridiculous.  If you get 30 days supply you have to take into account weekends, holidays, and just other general delays.  Sometimes the nurses that call them in for the doctor can be quite rude.  If only they understood the consequences of running out or even the stress it puts you through every month.

I myself also want to get off this stuff but I want to be able to do it at the pace I need to. I don't need all the threats or worries about refills.  Also, if I am reducing my dosage I need to have backup medicine if I need to updose again. I have a backup doctor that will also prescribe - because I asked if I changed physicians would they prescribe.  That just means I have to go from them from time time in case I did get in a bind.

Also, when I talked to doctors about tapering and all that - they have no clue - I searched all over my area and called many primary docs and also pdocs but most of them have no clue.

Anyway, talk to your doc and see if they will be more cooperative; if not, see if you can find one that will work with you.  It may take several to find someone who will work with you.  Even if you can just get one who will prescribe enough meds you can work the taper on your own.

Good luck!

Show up to the doc with a plan to get off, don't be wishy washy on it. Be true to yourself also. I have a doc appt on the 17th to try to convince my GP to switch to Diazepam so I can taper more effectively. I literally have 2 months worth of notes (every day) of the dosages I took, the cuts I took, and the slow but gradual process of the taper so far and I record w/d sxs's every day.

Go in there with a game plan, and I think doc will see your true intention and I believe docs truly want to help, regardless if some of their actions seem counter intuitive to that.

If u turn up with a taper plan, dont maki it TOO rigid, allow for the odd hold or updose... -in essence try to get your Dr to understand that to be successfull, you need to taper as your body allows, -which is symptom guided...

And just a little thing... -might i suggest that your body has become DEPENDENT, -which is a far cry from you being addicted...

There is a great article floating around on the importance of this termonology, -i hope someone can post a link...

Best wishes for your appointment... stay strong...

Let us know....

I agree with everyone else who says that you need a well thought out Taper Plan. And Cantfly is spot-on about making allowances for longer holds and unforeseeable blips, as well as in his observations on dependence vs. addiction.

I would just add that for a successful taper, it is necessary for everyone to understand that you must be in charge of the tapering process and that no-one else will try to impose conditions - and that your prescriber will acknowledge this and stand back enough to let it happen. This is a biggie.

You have already said that your doctor is supportive of your decisions and has been from the beginning. She will need good reasons to understand what you're doing. Give them to her.

Lastly, I don't know how difficult a direct taper from xanax is. I suspect it is one of the harder ways of going about this, as xanax is short-acting and 'bitey' - so in your shoes, I'd get advice from people here, who have better knowledge about direct tapering from xanax.

Why not print out this thread and show it to her?

All the very best.

Here's my thoughts and JMO.

I think you should fess up and tell her you made a big mistake by doing the switch to K. Ask to get back to your baseline 3mg X and go from there, The K didn't work, chock it up to a learning curve........start over tapering the X down very gradually from 3mgs. Your playing games with a very potent benzo here, hence the sever WD's. Fizzle is correct, your in the driver's seat with the taper.

If your Dr is willing to do this after what just went down, then she's a keeper.

Would printing out an Ashton Manual be a way to open dialogue? AShston doesn't come right out a say that long holds are needed, but does infer it by saying "everyone is different", says most added drugs don't help and emphasizes a slow, gradual taper after switch-over to longer acting benzo (her choice was/is valium). She also states that the patient needs to be in charge of taper per symptoms. JMO.

Good luck and if she persists, I'd go right to an ER and they will find you a Dr that will co-operate as they don't like people in WD going to ER constantly. This has been my experience. If she cuts you off, go to ER and/or patient relations and complain. This is still America.

i would go there with a plan as well. I would also explain your symptoms. So far she sounds like she has been obliging.  Were you unsuccessful in trying to taper from the 3 mg of Xanax before you crossed over to the Klonopin?

She never called me back. No I was not on a taper with Xanax my goal was a new year taper with clonazepam. Clonazepam was an epic fail. I'm still on .5 and my anxiety is giving me anxiety. If you go to the ER will they put you in detox if you have been on benzos over ten years with a sexual assault happening one year ago and you have just reached that anniversary date. I'm sorry to sound victim like I'm very scared. She says Xanax ER .5 is a whole different ball game as you need less so a .5 starting dose give it a try. I feel barefoot and I'm afraid of the unknown.

Confused,

Your state should have official Detox guidlines and regulations (protocol) available online... A fair read, but you will know whats what... they usually have treating Dr and support guidlines also... of the ones from around the globe i have read, consent and a willingness to comply has been a key factor... -not to say they wont try to scare you to clear the ER waiting room...

I havnt done a benzo SR, but have a tad of experience with another DOD med...

In my opinion they are much the same as fast or normal release, taken correctly without other complications... possibly a fraction less effective for some people...

If you had a very lose stool for example, SR probably wouldnt be appropriate... (hint)...

Stay positive and focused, you will get there...
